Hi there,
My name is Lotus Ann Gregory, and I'm a second-year student studying BA Journalism at the University of Derby. I am lucky enough to have been one of two programme representatives for my class two years in a row, and I would love the opportunity to work with and support the students across all journalism and humanities years.
My role as a programme representative has taught me so many valuable skills, such as communicating and speaking on behalf of peers, that I believe would transfer well to this role. As a journalism student, I have been praised for my unorthodox approach to academia that always achieves high results; just one example of how high I set my standards when it comes to university life. Being your PTO for journalism and humanities would be no different, as I already know how to engage and represent fellow students, especially online as we are all adapting to now.
As somebody that has accessed many of the universities supportive features, I am the ideal person to go to when needing a helping hand. I have Borderline Personality Disorder, a mental illness that can sometimes be debilitating. Thanks to the universities hidden disabilities policies and the excellent support networks available, I am confident that I would be a trusted advisor to students who may need pointing in the right direction.
While the courses this role represents offer some amazing options for feedback, I feel we could benefit from my insight into communicating with students and really making sure their voices are heard.
My aims are:
- Restructuring the way in which feedback is given for assignments so that it is more constructive, creating an overall standard of detailed, thoughtful marking.
- Establishing a regular point of contact between the PTO and students, to raise confidence in offering praise and feedback about the course and teaching standards, but also to ensure everyone's voices are heard and nothing is missed.
- Working with lecturers and support staff to enable students to reach their full academic potential by providing them with the resources they need to flourish and the encouragement they need to pursue their goals.
With your vote, I will create a culture of uplifting and understanding values within the courses this role represents.
