In 2015, the Union of Students led on the creation of a Student Charter. This document aimed to create a clear statement of the responsibilities of the University and the Union to provide a quality academic experience to every student, in addition to defining the expectations of students to make the most of their educational journey. A copy of the existing charter can be found on the University website.

As part of my aims this year, I am leading on a review of the Charter, believing it should be brought up to date and be reflective of the experience available to current students. This work has included benchmarking examples of best practice elsewhere and leading a working group of students, University and Union staff to come together and make the document all-encompassing and relevant.

To date, we have agreed upon extending the Charter to create five key themes which cut across the student experience:

  • Creating a thriving community?
  • Supporting an inclusive environment?
  • Delivering a transformational academic experience?
  • Empowering student voice to enact positive change?
  • Developing personal growth through transformative opportunities

For the next stage of the consultation, I would like to invite you to share your thoughts on the expectations of students against each of the five themes. A statement summarising the responsibilities of students has been created for each theme and can be found on the padlet.

The padlet will be available until Friday 12th March and you are invited to post any thoughts or comments you have on whether these statements are appropriate, whether you would wish to see them change and how the University and Union should support you to be able to engage at this level.

If you would like to give more detailed feedback please contact me via email: president@derbyunion.co.uk with your comments.

Thank you for your contribution.
