Failing a grade: Reattempts
Introduction
Sometimes, despite your best efforts, you might not pass an assessment. This is a normal part of university life, and many students will need another opportunity to demonstrate their learning during their studies.
The University allows reattempts so you can improve your work, build on feedback, and work towards passing your module.
This page explains how reattempts work, when they happen, and what happens if you still don’t pass.
What is a reattempt?
If you do not achieve a pass mark for a module, you will usually be given the opportunity to reattempt the assessment task(s) you did not pass.
This may include:
- Resubmitting coursework after making improvements based on feedback, or
- Redoing the original assessment (for example, an exam or presentation)
You will receive feedback from your first attempt, which should be used to help guide your improvements.
When Will It Take Place?
Reattempts usually take place as soon as possible, normally in the next available assessment period.
You will be told:
- What you need to complete
- How you need to complete it
- The deadline for submission
Make sure you regularly check your student email and UDo notifications for updates.
How are reattempts marked?
Reattempted assessments are capped at the pass mark
- Undergraduate: 40
- Postgraduate taught: 50
Your highest mark (from your first attempt or reattempt) will count towards your final module grade.
This means your best performance is used for your overall result, but the reattempt itself cannot achieve higher than the pass mark.
What if you still don’t pass?
If you do not pass after your reattempt, you may be considered for an exceptional reattempt.
This will only apply if:
- You have submitted all previous assessment attempts (including the reattempt), and
- No non-submission (NS) marks have been recorded for those attempts
Exceptional reattempts are decided at an assessment board. You do not need to take any action for this to be considered.
If you still don’t pass after all attempts
If you do not pass the module after all permitted attempts, you will usually be required to retake the module in full.
This means completing all assessment tasks again when the module is next available in your programme structure.
Can I reattempt a task I’ve already passed?
No. Once you have passed an assessment, that mark is final and cannot be reattempted.
Reattempt opportunities only apply to failed assessment tasks.
