Union Sport

The Union of Students have a dedicated Communities Team that support our student sport clubs and create welcoming and inclusive environments for you to join.

No matter what your experience or ability there will be something for you. We have over 30 sporting communities and are always on the look out for new opportunities to enhance your time at the University.

There are social sport sessions, competitive weekly BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) fixtures throughout term time, and opportunities available to represent the university as an individual if you already compete at a high level.

Sports Council

We have an elected group of students who champion sport at the Union, this Sports Council help promote sport and sporting opportunities to students at Derby. They're a great first port of call if you have any questions about sport, or our Communities.

Harry Leverett

Hi I’m Harry, I’m the Sports chair and am studying Strength & Conditioning MSc this year. I’ve represented both the Men’s Football and Futsal Clubs at the University for the past three years. I will also be the Vice-President for the Men’s Football club this year.

This year, I’m keen to maintain the status of sport as a whole at the University by making sure all clubs regularly engage with each other and utilise social media to their advantage to increase member intake.

If you see me on BUCS Wednesdays feel free to come and say hi, especially if you’re not involved in sport and would like to be!

Joanna Buckler

Hello, I'm Joanna and I'm studying primary teaching in my third year. I am part of the Dance Team and choreographer for the team this year. As a Sports Councillor I would love to highlight more non-BUCS sports and all their successes even though they compete differently. I would love to enhance BUCS takeovers by getting all sports teams involved. Coming from a non-BUCS sport myself I would love to support these communities the best way I know and can, whilst also supporting all other sports at our University. Feel free to reach out to me at any time!

Dionne Drury

Hello! I’m Dionne, I'm currently studying Physical Activity, Physical Education and Sport. I’m a part of the Squash Club and Women’s Rugby Union. As a part of the Sports Council this year I would like to continue the work previously done to make sport a friendly and open environment, making sport accessible to everyone who chooses to participate as well as ensure all sporting concerns and queries are tackled as best as possible to make sports at Derby the best experience! If you see me around campus, please don’t be afraid to say hello!

Aimee Barnes

I’m Aimee, a final year Digital Marketing student and I’m President of Volleyball. As Sports Councillor my aims are to support under-represented clubs and to make sports inclusive and accessible.
