An event organised by: University of Derby

Second-year Literature and History students take part in an annual public conference, where they present a series of papers based around a central theme.

As part of their degree second-year Literature and History students take part in an annual public conference, where they present a series of papers based around a central theme. In 2022, reflecting the centenary of ‘Miracle Year’ in the development of modernism the theme is Old and New.

The papers cover a wide range of topics, including jazz poetry and the Harlem Renaissance, the depictions of a new form of Hell in the work of Goya, and the impact of the unification of Germany on women. Students have also researched the utilisation of folk tales in contemporary African literature, the role of the past in shaping new forms of national identity, and the rewriting of old texts in new ways.

Everyone is very welcome to join us for a day of exciting and engaging presentations that explore how the old and the new interconnect in politics, culture and society.
