What is Rooted?
The Rooted project is an on campus allotment, outdoor study space and bio diversity area designed to give people at the University of Derby new opportunities for green growing activities. The project is accessible and open to all and also aims to give opportunities to get outdoors and positively stress levels, as well as physical and mental health. You don’t have to be an expert and anyone is welcome to get involved as much or as little as they like. Rooted is a partnership project involving Student Wellbeing, the Chaplaincy and the Students Union on land provided by the University.
How do I get involved?
If you would like to get involved in the project then please get in touch! Below is a bit more information...
- Sign up to our Sustainability newsletter to stay in the loop with Rooted developments.
- We run weekly sessions (as of July 2016) from 2pm - 4pm every Wednesday throughout the year. This isn’t just limited to term time either!
- There is no cost to get involved; all we ask you to do is sign up to the Rooted code of conduct.
- There may be more opportunities to work on Rooted outside of our regular hours (wed, 2-4pm) if they don’t suit you. Please get in touch to see if anything appropriate can be arranged.
Where is Rooted located?
Rooted is located just behind the Markeaton Lodge as the north end of Markeaton Street.
The site is only a mile away from Kedleston road if walking. Cycle stands are on site too if you are getting there by bike. The number 4 shuttle bus stops at the nearby Markeaton Street campus too. For more information on student and staff parking visit the UoD travel site.
Outdoor Study Space
One aim is to provide a space where students can enjoy the outdoors and the peacefulness that comes with it. The area will offer a quiet seated are which aims to promote positive wellbeing. We encourage people to use this space even if they are not working on the allotment but we ask that you respect the peace and quiet.
Biodiversity
We are fortunate enough to have Rooted located in area with varied ecology and wildlife. This gives us potential to promote a programme of increased biodiversity and habitat creation at Markeaton Street campus.
