🎬 Film Night: The Magic of Malanka & The Spirit of Christmas 🇺🇦
Join us for a film that captures the true soul of the Ukrainian winter.
This week, the Ukrainian Students Society is screening "Malanka and Christmas," a stunning documentary by Ukraïner!
👀 What to expect: The film takes us on a journey with Dmytro Mazuriak (from the band KAZKA). It begins in the snowy Carpathians with the Malanka carnival with a wild, ancient festival of handmade masks, straw bears, and vibrant chaos that has to be seen to be believed.
But the story doesn't end there. We travel from the festive West to the de-occupied East, where a group of young volunteers brings the Christmas spirit to villages that have survived occupation.
❤️ Why watch? It is a story of contrasts: the bright colours of the carnival against the grey reality of the frontlines. It shows that even in the darkest times, our culture remains a light that brings us together!
Whether you miss the traditions of home or just want to see a side of Ukraine rarely shown on the news, this is for you.
When: 11/12/2025 (Thursday)
Where: Cavendish Building (Room TBC)
Language: Ukrainian (with English Subtitles)
Bring a friend and let’s watch together! And yes, snacks and drinks are provided!😁
⚠️Note: While this film celebrates our culture, please be aware that it was filmed during the full-scale invasion. The second half of the documentary features scenes from de-occupied territories, including images of destruction and the sounds of air raid sirens. It is a beautiful film about resilience, but it can be an emotional one as well.
