Employability Week
Student Employability Week is a dedicated series of events designed to help you build the skills, confidence, and connections you need for your future career. Taking place from 4th–8th May, this week brings together the Careers and Employability Team, the Develop@Derby team, programme leaders, Union staff, and external guest speakers to support you at every stage of your journey.
Open to all students, Employability Week offers a range of sessions running daily from 10.00am to 4.00pm, covering everything from career planning and CV writing to networking and industry insights. Whether you’re just starting to think about your future or preparing to step into the workplace, there’s something for you.
By attending, you’ll gain practical advice, discover new opportunities, and leave feeling more prepared and confident about your next steps.

Know Your Strengths
5th May, 10.00am–11.00pm
This workshop is all about discovering your personal strengths. Understanding what you’re good at can help you perform confidently in strength‑based recruitment and choose career paths that suit you and your goals.
Fail Better — The Career Skill Nobody Teaches
5th May, 11.00am–12.00pm
Workshop explores how to reframe failure as a powerful learning tool, manage uncertainty with confidence, and use unexpected opportunities to shape a career path that is uniquely your own.
Critical Thinking
5th May, 12.00pm–1.00pm
This session introduces critical thinking as a way to analyse information and make reasoned judgements, followed by an interactive activity to develop these skills. It also provides time for reflection, discussion, and considering how to apply critical thinking in everyday situations.
CVs and Cover Letters
5th May, 1.00pm–2.00pm
In this workshop, the Union's PAL Senior Coordinator, Chris Fleming, will reflect on his experience reviewing just under 200 CVs and Cover Letters. Attendees will also be able to see some real examples of successful written applications and learn some tips and tricks on how to make a good CV and Cover Letter.
Mock Assessment Centre
5th May, 11.00am–12.00pm
An opportunity to practise in a supportive, low-pressure environment. This mock interview will help you build confidence, strengthen your employability skills, and gain insight into the types of questions you may be asked. You’ll also receive immediate, constructive feedback in a low-stakes setting.
Leadership and Future Thinking
6th May, 10.00am–11.00am
This session introduces leadership and future thinking skills, helping you understand your context, anticipate challenges, and plan ahead to drive change and manage risk. It includes an interactive activity to build your leadership abilities, along with time to reflect, share ideas, and consider how to apply these skills in practice.
Interview Reflections
6th May, 11.00am–12.00pm
This workshop will review 'common' interview questions and give attendees a chance to participate in mock interviews with Union staff.
Making the most of the Careers Service
6th May, 12.00pm–1.00pm
This workshop introduces the University Careers Service and how it can support you throughout your studies and beyond. Learn what support is available, how to access it, and how the Careers Service can help explore career options, build employability skills, and successfully transition into work or further study.
Creative Problem Solving
6th May, 2.00pm–3.00pm
This session introduces creative problem solving as a way to generate innovative solutions when conventional approaches fall short. It includes an interactive activity to develop your skills, along with time to reflect, share ideas, and consider how to apply them in practice.
Self Direction and Planning
7th May, 10.00am–11.00am
This session introduces self-direction and planning as tools to help you use your initiative, stay productive, and maintain a healthy work–life balance. It includes an interactive activity to build these skills, along with time to reflect, share ideas, and consider how to apply them in practice.
Union Employability
7th May, 11.00am–12.00pm
This session explores how getting involved in the Students’ Union such as becoming a rep, PAL Leader, or joining a community can build valuable skills and enhance your employability. It also draws on lived experiences from former Officers to show how union involvement can lead to future roles within a Students’ Union.
Time Managment
7th May, 2.00pm–3.00pm
This session introduces time management as a way to confidently balance your studies, work, and daily responsibilities. It includes an interactive activity to build your skills, along with time to reflect, share ideas, and consider how to apply them in practice.
