We are advertising for a team of PAL Leaders, this is a PAID opportunity, and we have one vacancy per discipline.

About the role

Peer Assisted Learning (PAL) is where a PAL Leader (in year 2+) supports students in 1st Year and foundation years within their discipline by supporting students with their transition to University and academic study.

We are looking for to students support this project throughout term time on Microsoft Teams.

The role has a flexible working pattern which can work around study and other personal commitments.

The role of a PAL Leader is supportive, a friendly face and has plenty of student contact. So, if you are a supportive student who is passionate about delivering the best student experience, who has an exceptional ability to talk to students and have great problem-solving skills, then we want to hear from you!

All students will be expected to attend a compulsory, paid training session, and assessment for their suitability for the role. Interviews will be done digitally.

Working Hours and Length of Contract

  • Adhoc working hours, but up to two hours per week
  • During term time online, end date 10/06/2022 (subject to change)

Key Tasks:

  • To be responsible for your discipline Teams channel and respond to questions asked by the student body
  • To develop engaging content to be posted out weekly on your site to engage learned and create a positive learning community
  • To actively signpost students to the support of your academic liaison
  • To host an interdisciplinary session for your learner
  • To work with your Academic Liaison (member of staff who is from your discipline to help support with academic information) to create information and engaging materials to support students transition to an online learning environment
  • To support with the collection of feedback when needed to enhance the scheme
  • To report to the PAL Coordinator with any trends or struggles students are facing
  • PAL Leaders are representatives of the Union of Student and should always reflect the values and be willing the share Union messages as required
  • To keep to professional boundaries when in post

Candidate and Skills Requirements:

  • Currently studying at University of Derby in year 2+ (if you are a Master or PhD student, you must have studied your undergraduate in one of the disciplines)
  • To be a leader from your discipline
  • Experience of presenting effectively and explaining complex pieces of information to different levels of understanding
  • Experience of working effectively and using own initiative
  • Competent at using Microsoft Teams and other Microsoft packages
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills at all levels
  • Able to approach and talk to student when they are hard to engage
  • To problem solve and signpost effectively
  • A positive ambassador of the Union of Students
  • Desire to work within a democratic and student led environment
  • Understanding and commitment to equal opportunities
  • Desire to work with an organisation which serve a culturally diverse membership
  • Committed, positive, outgoing, and approachable with a 'can do' attitude
