A huge part of the student lifestyle is finding friends that you’ll keep for life. We want to help you find your tribe, so we thought we’d share a few tips on the best ways to make friends whilst you’re here.
A huge part of the student lifestyle is finding friends that you’ll keep for life. We want to help you find your tribe, so we thought we’d share a few tips on the best ways to make friends whilst you’re here.
Get involved
There are so many opportunities to get involved with events and regular extra-curricular activities. From joining a Community to stopping by one of our events (keep your eyes on our events page to see what’s coming up!), there will be plenty of chances to get involved and meet new people throughout the year!
Take every opportunity
You can create your own opportunities to build friendships with your fellow students in many ways! Working on a group project? Why not suggest meeting up in the Union Social Space to work on the project in a relaxed environment and stay for a coffee afterwards? Heading to a lecture solo? Ask someone if they want to sit with you or ask to join someone’s table! There’s an opportunity to make friends at every corner whilst you’re at university, so take every chance you get!
Put yourself out there
It can be scary, but you can make small steps in putting yourself out there that’ll help you feel more confident when making friends! Whether it’s spending some time in a shared space (such as your Halls common room) or making small talk before a lecture starts, these small steps will help build the foundations of friendship.
One key thing to remember is that everybody is in the same boat! Most people will have come to university not knowing anybody, so there are plenty of people out there who are also looking to make friends.
