Did you know that when you become a student, you're automatically a member of the Union? Well now you do!
As a member, there are lots of services you can make use of, so here's a handy guide on everything you need to know about the Union to make the most of your time as a student! Whilst we are one big team, we work in smaller departments to ensure we have dedicated staff to help you in every aspect of student life.
Communities
We have over 100 student-led Communities that are split into six categories:
- Academic
- Faith & Belief
- Hobbies & Interest
- Liberation & Equality
- Nationalities & Culture
- Sport
These groups are run by students, but supported by the Union. You'll be able to meet all of the groups at freshers' Fair, but in the meantime you can start browsing what Communities are on offer on our website. At the start of each term, Communities host 'give it a go' (GIAG) sessions where you can try them out before getting your membership; this is a great opportunity to try any groups you're interested in and maybe find yourself a new hobby! Communities are also a greta way to meet new people, so we'd recommend getting involved in as much as possible!
Advice
Our Advice service is completely separate to the University, so we're able to offer impartial advice to all students. The main areas our Advisors cover are:
- Money matters
- Housing
- Sexual health & relationships
- Academic
- Wellbeing
- Sexual violence
You can book a FREE advice appointment at any stage of your studies, and this can be face-to-face, over the phone or via Teams. Our friendly Advisors are trained to support you with any issues that may occur during your time as a student, so please make use of the service if you need to!
Voice
Our Voice team are dedicated to making sure student voice is heard and represented at the highest levels. Our Voice team looks after:
- Student Reps
- The Peer Assisted Learning scheme (PAL)
- Elections
- The student feedback system
Commercial & Venues
We run:
- Blends - the on-campus coffee shop at Kedleston Road, Markeaton Street and the Cavendish Building
- Campus Kitchen - serving delicious hot food via a set of ordering screens in the Union Social Space at Kedleston Road
- Keddies - home of the meal deal and other goodies at Kedleston Road
- Street Shop - home of the meal deal at Markeaton Street
- RAMMED - the weekly student club night at Molly Malone's
