It was a day of mixed emotions for the University of Derby sports teams, as many of our teams took part in cup competitions and sought to make the next round.

Starting with the football and arguably the most impressive performance of the day, the Women’s 1sts put on a dazzling display at Kedleston Road to beat Worcester 2nds 11-0 and progress to the next round of the Conference Cup.

The game that took place straight after, involving the Men’s 1sts was marred with controversy and they were mightily unlucky to crash out of the competition to Worcester 3rds, who just edged the victory by two goals to one.

Meanwhile, away from home, the Men’s 4ths won dramatically in extra-time against Coventry 2nds, making them the only one of the men’s teams to progress to the next round of the cup, as the 2nds and 5ths dropped out of the Conference Cup and Conference Trophy respectively.

The Badminton Men’s and Women’s teams were comfortably beaten by their Nottingham University counterparts in the Premier North division; the former losing 8-0, whilst the latter lost 7-1.

The only other league fixture of the day was the Men’s Basketball 1sts who lost in the Midlands 1A to Loughborough 2nds by a scoreline of 93-65.

Continuing with the basketball, the Men’s 2nds and Women’s 1sts both secured qualification to the next round of the Conference Cup with strong performances.

The only other Derby wins of the day were for the Netball Women’s 3rds, who comfortably disposed of Coventry 3rds and the Men’s Squash 1sts, who beat Derby 2nds.

The Women’s Netball 1sts were beaten by Nottingham 3rds, whilst the Men’s and Women’s Volleyball 2nds were also knocked out of the Conference Cup.

The Men’s Table Tennis 2nds and Men’s Hockey 1sts also suffered similar fates, as both dropped out of the Conference Cup.

This week of BUCS is not yet over however, as the Futsal Women’s 2nds will play five consecutive games on Saturday as they look to push up the Midlands 2A table, while the Men’s 2nds will take on Loughborough 5ths on Sunday as they aim to to do the same in the Midlands 3A.
