Men's mental health and encouraging open discussion has been on the Union agenda for a long time, and charities like HUMEN – a movement to improve and maintain men's mental health through campaigning and The HUMEN Space, have reached out in order to better support students. Beth Baxtrem shares why they're a great organisation to work with:

Alongside the men’s football team, I have been working closely with HUMEN, a men’s mental health charity who run virtual safe spaces for men to talk, listen and connect on a regular basis. I think this charity does amazing work surrounding a topic that is often overlooked and not spoken about enough.

I was, and still am, extremely proud of the work our men’s football team have done surrounding raising awareness and fundraising for HUMEN. Luke Hobson, a member of the team, spoke to me about HUMEN and he stated,

HUMEN are an amazing charity who focus on a huge problem in today’s society which is men’s mental health. By supporting HUMEN we can all hopefully bring the men’s suicide rates down and give men a path to get out their dark places. This is what HUMEN do by putting weekly sessions on it enables men to attend and talk about their problems with others who are in similar positions.

We are currently promoting the sessions HUMEN run online, however in the future we hope to run sessions right here at the University. This would require recruiting a student volunteer to facilitate these sessions. Look out for details - you will see this advertised soon!"

The sessions take place from 6.30pm-7.30pm every Monday.
