Postgraduates and The Union

A lot of students think of the Union and remember being an undergrad at wild parties, enjoying clubs and societies.

A lot of students think of the Union and remember being an undergrad at wild parties, enjoying clubs and societies. When you get to PGR you are often too busy juggling work and/or kids alongside studies to do that kind of thing. I know I am… When I think of Carnage now, I have images of what my kids have done to the living room, not a boozy week in town.

So, what does the Union offer for a PGR student then?

The Union is actually far more than drinking and socialising… although they do that well and we as PGR students shouldn’t feel like we can’t join in if we want… but they also offer a whole range of helpful facilities which can be accessed by PGR students.

Help & Advice

The Union help and advice service is there to help students with literally any issue that you might have. If you are struggling academically, they can help. If you are struggling with accommodation, childcare, or finances, they are there to support you. There is a team of friendly advisors with who you can get in touch for phone, email, or in-person appointments that fit your schedule. Simply book an appointment online through the Union site and off you go.

Jobs

I worked for years at the Union info point, and it was one of the best jobs I ever had. Not only did I learn the inner workings of The Union (which has been really useful in helping me through my learning) but it is also a really fun and supportive place to work. From the offices at The Union to the bar and Blends, there are a number of roles and the hours fit around you as a student, so I would highly recommend checking out what they have available if you are looking for some hours.

Me

Not to brag but I am an alright sort. I have a lot of knowledge about what The Union can provide in terms of support, and I have a big mouth so if something needs adding or changing, I will make sure the right person hears about it. I am the PGR Chair for The Union and I am literally here for you to make sure that the PGR experience at Derby is as good as it can possibly be. You can email me any time at edu.pgr@derbyunion.co.uk. If you are worried about anything, just drop me an email and even if I can’t directly help there is a pretty strong chance I will be able to get you to the person who can. I am also a fan of a gif so please don’t hesitate to drop me a random one if you find you have some time on your hands.

Officers

There are officers for everything. Are you disabled and find there is something at the university that is hindering you? There is a Welfare officer and a disabilities officer. Make sure you let them know. Are you part of the rainbow mafia and have an issue with inclusion? There is an LGBTQA+ officer. Get in touch with them and get your voice heard. I know you are a PGR student so you can get in touch with me about anything PGR related. There is support for everyone and every issue. All the contact details can be found on the Union site.

Events

Any event at The Union, including Freshers, is accessible for PGR students. Often PGR students don’t feel like they are supposed to be there, but I am working my hardest to normalise our attendance to these events (by that I mean I am at Freshers Fair every year without fail stocking up on pens and rubber ducks). There are loads of events which have a slower pace such as the outdoor cinema which is worth going to even if you have seen the film, because free pizza, yo! Also, I am more than happy to take suggestions for fresher’s event suggestions.

Reasonably priced and delicious drinks and food

If you haven’t been to Blends, then you are missing out my friend. Get yourself down there ASAP and see. The teas/coffees/hot chocolates/cakes in Blends are absolutely delicious and a fraction of the price of other coffee places.
