As this academic year comes to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on just how special this year has been, not only because of the events, campaigns, and achievements we’ve accomplished together, but because of the people, conversations, and sense of community that made it all meaningful.
As this academic year comes to a close, I’ve found myself reflecting on just how special this year has been, not only because of the events, campaigns, and achievements we’ve accomplished together, but because of the people, conversations, and sense of community that made it all meaningful.
Working within the Students’ Union environment has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my journey. Every day brought opportunities to connect with students from different backgrounds, listen to their experiences, celebrate their successes, and support them through challenges. What makes the Union so unique is that it is more than just a place-it is a community built on belonging, representation, and student voice.
One of my biggest reflections from this year is seeing the real impact that small moments of connection can have. Whether it was welcoming students during Freshers, hosting coffee chats, running community showcases, or simply having conversations at stalls across campus, those interactions helped create spaces where students felt seen, heard, and included. Seeing community membership grow beyond our targets and hearing that over 90% of students felt welcomed at university was incredibly rewarding because it showed that students were genuinely finding a place where they belonged.
This year was also filled with unforgettable celebrations and events that brought energy and culture to campus life. From Holi and Diwali celebrations to Christmas, Dashain, and New Year events, it was amazing to witness students coming together to celebrate traditions, make memories, and learn from one another. The atmosphere at these events reminded me how important community and cultural representation are in shaping a positive university experience.
Alongside celebrations, I’m especially proud of the work we achieved around inclusion and representation. Celebrating Black History Month, LGBT+ History Month, Women’s History Month, Disability History Month, and Faith and Belief Month created opportunities for students to share their stories, raise awareness, and feel represented within university life. Events like Afro Music and Jollof Connects, handing out sunflower lanyards during Disability History Month, and creating safe discussions around sexuality, faith, and identity showed the power of student-led spaces in encouraging understanding and belonging.
Another highlight of the year was supporting students with employability and future opportunities. Through career coffee chats, CV clinics, mock interviews, workshops, and Employability Week, it was inspiring to see students grow in confidence and begin recognising their own potential. Hearing students say they felt more prepared for future careers reminded me that support does not always come from huge changes, sometimes it comes from simply creating opportunities, listening to concerns, and giving students the confidence to believe in themselves.
What I will take away most from this year is the importance of student voice. Throughout every project, event, and campaign, students shaped the work we delivered. Their feedback, ideas, and lived experiences guided decisions and ensured that our work stayed meaningful and relevant. Being able to represent students and turn their concerns into action has been both a privilege and a responsibility that I will always value.
Of course, no year comes without challenges, and there is still more work to do. There are always ways we can continue improving accessibility, engagement, and representation for all students. But looking back, I feel incredibly proud of the progress we have made together and the supportive, vibrant, and inclusive community we have continued to build.
Most importantly, this year reminded me why the Students’ Union matters so much. It creates opportunities for students to find friendships, discover confidence, celebrate identity, and feel part of something bigger than themselves. Being part of that journey has been genuinely inspiring.
To every student, staff member, volunteer, and community leader who contributed to this year- thank you. Thank you for your energy, passion, creativity, and willingness to make our university experience better for one another.
It has truly been an unforgettable year.
