As my time as VP Activities comes to an end, I have found myself reflecting on what has been an incredibly rewarding and memorable year.
As my time as VP Activities comes to an end, I have found myself reflecting on what has been an incredibly rewarding and memorable year.
When I first arrived at the University of Derby all the way from New Zealand, I wasn't entirely sure what to expect. Like many students, I was stepping into a completely new environment, navigating challenges, uncertainty, and trying to find my feet. What truly shaped my university experience was becoming part of a community. Through student groups, sport, leadership opportunities and the Students' Union, I found friendships, personal development, and a sense of purpose that influenced my time at Derby.
That experience ultimately inspired me to run for the role of VP Activities. I wanted other students to discover the same sense of belonging that had such a positive impact on me. Throughout this year, my goal has been to help students connect with others, try new experiences, develop their skills, and make the most of their university experience.
Despite this, it was not always smooth sailing - the role has also challenged me. Stepping into a full-time officer position meant learning quickly, adapting to new situations, and finding confidence in unfamiliar spaces. There were moments that tested me, but seeing ideas become reality and watching students engage with opportunities made every challenge worthwhile.
One of the greatest privileges of the role has been working alongside our incredible student leaders, committee members, volunteers, and representatives. Their dedication is what drives our student communities forward. Whether organising events, leading our communities, supporting teammates, or creating welcoming environments for others, they consistently demonstrate the passion and commitment that make Derby such a special place.
This year has also been filled with achievements worth celebrating. From a 3rd consecutive successful Varsity victory to national sporting success, our students have continued to demonstrate excellence both on and off the field. Watching teams compete, student groups thrive, and individuals grow in confidence has been one of the most rewarding aspects of representing you all as students.
However, beyond the awards, victories, and events, it is the people I will remember most. The conversations with students, hearing your stories, understanding your experiences, and seeing the impact that communities can have on someone's university journey are moments I will always cherish. They consistently reminded me why this role matters and why student communities are so important.
I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout the year. From the Students' Union staff and university colleagues, to student leaders and fellow officers, your guidance, encouragement, and friendship have made this experience unforgettable. You have helped me grow both personally and professionally, and I will always be thankful for the opportunities you have given me. I have gained so much experience from just one year in this role and I will forever be indebted to all of the staff at the Union for their part they have played in my journey!
To those continuing their studies next year, keep saying yes to opportunities. Get involved, put yourself forward, and make the most of everything university life has to offer. To those graduating, be proud of everything you have achieved and carry those experiences with you into whatever comes next.
Serving as your Vice President Activities has been an absolute privilege. I hope, in some small way, I have contributed positively to your student experience, just as this community has contributed so much to mine!
