Official statement from the Union

We are aware of the serious incident that occurred on Saturday night (28 March) in Derby city centre. We understand that this will be an unsettling and worrying time for our community, and our thoughts are with everyone affected. At this time, we have not been made aware that any University of Derby students were involved.

The Police have indicated that they do not believe there to be any ongoing risk linked to the incident on 28th March. Derby remains a safe city, however as your Officers, we want to remind you of the steps you can take to help you stay safe wherever you are and of the support that is available to you. It's always important to be aware of your surroundings and keep important contact numbers easily accessible. You can report any concerns to the University security team, and you are always welcome to come into the Union of Students’ office and speak to us.

As a student, there are a range of support options:

  • Union Advice Service: Free confidential advice and support through the Union of Students, via advice@derbyunion.co.uk, +44 (0) 1332 591 507     
  • University Counselling and Mental Health services can be accessed using this self referral form  
  • Talk Campus: Is an app/website which provides a place for students to experience peer-to-peer support.
  • Chaplaincy: The chaplaincy team can be contacted by email (chaplaincy@derby.ac.uk) or in person at the Multi-Faith Centre.
  • Safe Zone: You can download the Safe Zone app on most mobile devices and log in with your University of Derby email, using this app you can access wellbeing support information, contact security, report non-urgent tips and contact security for urgent and non-urgent support as well as first aid. 
  • University Security Team: They can be contacted 24 hours via their email (security@derby.ac.uk) or phone number 01332 591109.

Police appeal If you witnessed anything or have footage that could support the police investigation, Derbyshire Police are asking people to come forward. Please quote incident 1131 of March 28 – you can contact them using the below methods:
