Andy Burnham has scrapped Starmer’s plans to stop jury trials for defendants on trial for a sentence less than 3 years. This plan was put in place to attempt to reduce the case backlog by having more either way offences resolved with just a judge and more indictable offences having a jury trial. However, something within the courts system needs to change as the case backlog according to the most recent Ministry of Justice figures is 80,829 cases are still needing to be dealt with meaning this figure has almost doubled since 2020. Courts Minister Sarah Sackman said this backlog could take nearly 300 years to clear to pre-COVID levels without reforms to the system being made.

A US convicted murderer, Christa Pike, was sentenced to death by lethal injection in Tennessee on the 30th of September. However, this execution failed and now Christa is in critical condition in the hospital as the two injections of pentobarbital failed to stop her heartbeat. She is unconscious and is intubated and, on a ventilator. Scientists believe that a ruptured vein or her thrombocytosis may have caused the failure of the execution. A ruptured vein would mean that the pentobarbital would have spread across the surface of the skin and not into the blood which it needs to be in to successful stop the heart. Thrombocytosis causes blood clots to form so if a clot formed at the injection site it could potentially have blocked the pentobarbital from entering her veins therefore it was ineffective. Hospital staff are now working to save her life however, if she survives, she may be left with a brain injury due to the delay of beginning resuscitation. A second attempt at execution may also occur as seen with Kenneth Eugene Smith.
