Hidden Gems at Markeaton Street: Discovering the Digital Design Hub

When students think of Markeaton Street Campus, they often think of the home of our art and design courses, among others. What many students don't realise, however, is that tucked away beside the Graphic Design Studio (MS012) is one of the University's most creative and innovative spaces: the Digital Design Hub (DDH).

The idea for this blog actually started during one of the union’s Officers’ Scrutiny Report Sessions, where student raise issues, share feedback, and hold executive officers accountable to their manifesto objectives, whilst also discussing ways to improve overall student experience. During the conversation, it became clear that many students simply weren't aware of the incredible facilities available to them across the University.

That's where Student Representative Aneeka stepped in.

Passionate about ensuring students make the most of the resources available to them, Aneeka graciously offered to show me around the Digital Design Hub. What followed was a fascinating tour that lasted much of the day, as she introduced me to the wide range of equipment, services, and creative opportunities hidden within the space.

The Digital Design Hub offers an impressive selection of specialist equipment and services, including:

  • Risograph printing

  • Laser cutting and engraving

  • Iron-on press facilities

  • Fabric printing

  • Embroidery machines

  • Bookbinding support

  • Printing on acetate and other specialist materials

  • Custom design applications for items such as mugs and other products

Whether you're developing a university project, exploring a personal creative idea, or simply curious about learning a new skill, the DDH provides opportunities to bring your ideas to life.

One of the most exciting things I learned during the visit was just how approachable and supportive the team are. The Hub is supported by fantastic technicians, Katharine and Katie, who are always willing to guide students through processes and help them get the most out of the equipment.

Although the Digital Design Hub primarily supports students studying art and design-related courses, there are quieter periods throughout the year when students from other disciplines may also be able to access the facilities. January, June, July, and August are typically less busy and therefore offer the best opportunities for wider student access.

If you're interested in using the facilities, it's important to contact the team before visiting. Simply email ddh@derby.ac.uk outlining your enquiry, and the team will be able to advise you on the most suitable equipment, support available, and when you can attend.

Any payments for services must be made through the University of Derby Online Shop. To do this, you will need to create an account at unishop.derby.ac.uk.

This experience also served as a reminder of the important role Student Representatives play within our university community. Reps like Aneeka don't just attend meetings and collect feedback, they actively work to ensure student voices are heard, identify opportunities for improvement, and help connect students with resources that can enhance their university experience.

Aneeka's commitment to sharing these facilities and helping put this piece together is a fantastic example of student representation in action. Without her enthusiasm and willingness to showcase what the Digital Design Hub has to offer, many students may never have discovered this hidden gem at Markeaton Street.

So next time you're on campus, remember that some of the University's most exciting opportunities might be just around the corner!
