Debate

Political Party Groups, or PPGs for short, are child societies under the Debate Society that exist to represent students at the University of Derby for a given political party.

As the Debate Society is the parent to them, the PPGs are governed by the Constitution for the Debate Society as well as there own. However, the Constitution does give PPGs a high level of autonomy over a number of areas including marketing, events, memberships and their own constitutions. Each PPG is led by a PPG Leader, though some may have more positions to assist the Leader.

Any member of the Debate Society is entitled to join, or create, a PPG. With joining, you can request to join any PPG using either the New Members Form or contact one of the Speakers, however, please note that all membership requests need to be approved by the PPG Leaders.

To create a PPG, you can submit a request using this link. To create one, you need to have at least three interested non-committee members (including yourself), and that the PPG be based on a recognised party in the United Kingdom (or its devolved administrations). Once a request has been made, the President Speaker will then seek a simple majority from the Committee and the Societies Coordinator at the Union of Students.

Once approved, the Speakers will assist the new PPG in setting themselves up and the Chancellor and Secretary may also offer support on their areas.
