So, what is the History Society?
A bunch of people sat around discussing 19th century economics and politics, reading books and engaging in heated debate about the price of bread in 1888?
Well, that may be part of the History course but it is not part of the society!
(Unless that’s what you want, I’m sure it could be arranged…)
The History Society is a club for students to spend some time with lecturers and fellow students outside of the classroom, as well as socialising with students from different subjects. We host annual Ghost Walks where students can learn a little bit of Derby History and can discover some of Derby’s pubs as well as local haunt. We host a monthly pub quiz which covers every topic EXCEPT History. We organise trips to local places of interest – sometimes historic – sometimes to random markets and cities. We organise debates on various topics, we hold film nights, and we take groups to the pub just to have a chat.
This year the History Society is working with other societies to show how an academic subject can be inter linked, and to show that academic societies have fun. Alongside this we are becoming more involved with charity, so there is scope for members to be involved with much more that the union has to offer via a membership with the History Society.
Most importantly we are trying to engage with our members and supply them with what they want. We like to make sure that you get a say in the events we hold, so join as a member and tell us what you want…
