University of Derby Medical Society - Not just for doctors!

Welcome to the University of Derby Medical Society page. We thank you for your interest and just know that you'll love all that we have to offer this academic year! Our society is evolving and we can't wait for you to join us on this exciting journey. We're an all inclusive group of students studying a variety of courses - from Special Educational Needs, to Biomedical Science, to Forensics and Human Biology. It doesn't matter what course you're on- if you just enjoy watching medical dramas on tv or if you're an aspiring doctor. 

Your committee has been working hard all summer to plan a fun packed year. By joining us you can expect:

  • Lab Practial Sessions- NHS Biomedical Procedures 
    Ever wanted to try out the laboratory? Want more pratical time alongside your course? Join us for additional lab sessions covering many different techniques frequently used by biomedical scientists!

  • First Aid Course

Taking place at the University of Derby and Burton Hospital - Royal Derby - Get to see inside the medical education centre while learning invaluable life saving skills.
 

  • Application Support
    Information and support on what to include in your personal statement, support for the  Graduate Entry Medicine application process, postgraduate applications and anything else that you require.
     
  • NHS Laboratory Tour Trip
    A guided tour around a functioning NHS Laboratory. Including Pre-Analytical Area, Chemical Pathology, Microbiology, Haematology & Blood Transfusion 
     
  • Professional Development Courses
    Online courses and support during completion including:
    Understanding Autism, Asperger's and ADHD
    Bridging the dementia divide
    Depression: A compassionate view
    Pressure Ulcer Prevention
     
  • Medical Sign Language Classes
    Stand out from the crowd (and contribute towards inclusivity) with our medical sign language classes. 
     
  • Open Days
    Come with us to Open Days at various institutes, including medical schools, universities for postgraduate study, research facilities and graduate opportunites.
     
  • Fundraising
    How long can you perform efficient CPR? It's not as easy as it sounds! Join us for our Sponsored CPR Marathon this year, taking place in the atrium of Kedleston Road to help raise awareness of first aid training. 

    Active? Prove it! £1 entry, the student with the most activity (steps or distance for those who cannot walk) in one day. Amazon gift cards to be won, 20% of all profits will be donated to a charity close to our hearts. (TBC)
     
  • Fortnightly Meetings
    Informal meetings to catch up with members, taking place both online and in person. An opportunity to discuss the direction of the society, arrange our exciting activities, present information on various courses (including all you need to know about GEM), guest speakers, work experience and employment opportunities. Problem based learning, diagnose your 'patient' based on history, presentation and tests.
     
  • Study Groups

Taking place around deadline times, group revision for exams / assessments and GAMSAT / UCAT practise questions. All courses welcome.

  • Post-Mortem Live
     

Work Hard, Play Harder
Planning for a party is currently underway! Date TBC and dependant on membership and fundraising. 

 


Membership for Academic Year 21/22 - £10
Membership enables free entry to all our meetings, study groups, application support, open days, medical sign language classes, professional development courses and lab sessions. A small contibution may be applied for other activities but we aim to use membership funds and fundraising opportunities to make sure any additional cost for our activities is minimal!

Give It A Go- FREE - Wednesday 29th September - 6.30pm
Come and join us for our give it a go session! This is completely free and a great opportunity to see all that we have to offer this year, get an insight into the material presented at our meetings, get to know the committee and break the ice. Bring your friends or come alone, everyone is welcome! Oh, did we mention the free coffee and cake?
