American Football

The American Football club is regarded as one of the University’s top sports clubs. The club has a team of dedicated coaches who lead training sessions twice a week. 2012 saw the introduction of American Football into the BUCS leagues, and huge success for the Derby Braves who won their divisional league and reached the national championship semi-finals.

The Braves currently compete in the BUCS Premier League North division playing against some of the best institutions in the country where they have managed to achieve in the 2017-2018 Season 2nd in the country as they got to the National Finals in their Premier League. 

Fixtures normally take place on a Sunday. 


In the latest news one of the previous members of the team Marcus Peterson who was a (WR) Wide Reciever for the Derby Braves has just been signed a place With the LA Chargers in the NFl (National Football League) in America which is a massive achievement!

Training Times:

Training sessions take place 2-3 times a week depending on fixtures. All training and home fixtures take place at the Universities main site on Kedleston Road.

  • Tuesday’s 7-9PM – Classroom session followed by session on the 4G Pitch
  • Thursday’s 7-9PM – Classroom Session followed by session on the 4G Pitch
  • Sunday’s 11-3PM – Training Session or Sunday’s 1-4PM – Home game fixtures


All of our training sessions are lead by our committed training staff. The training staff is headed up by our Head Coach Bernie Hackshaw. We are very fortunate to have a large and strong voluntary coaching team that supports Bernie, which consists of over 25 years of involvement with the Braves.
