Student Representatives

The Union of Students are responsible for the academic representation structure at the University. Students just like you volunteer each year to represent their peers across the many courses at the University. Their job is to work closely with the Union to identify any student issues or needs and represent the student voice at the highest meetings at the University.

Representation makes the student voice extremely powerful and is a fantastic opportunity for you to develop new skills and deliver real, lasting changes across the University. Rep responsibilities

This is the basic outline of what being a rep entails and the expectations the Union has if you're in one of our Rep roles.

  • Contact Your programme lead each term to build a relationship and provide student feedback to them
  • Use the Rep Feedback Form to submit what you have collected from your work
  • Direct students to the Union Feedback system for submitting their own individual feedback that will be assigned to a rep to resolve
  • Attend Union Meetings
  • Attend Student Voice Forum (Term 2)
  • Try to stay in contact with as many people on your course as possible

Frequently Asked Questions

I am a Rep, where do I start?

Contact your Programme Lead to ask for a meeting and for them to announce you to the cohort. Use the feedback you collect and send it to the Voice Team via the feedback form sent out to you. You will also be messaged by the Union for any concerns from students on your course and need to action a response.

How much do I need to do?

You need attending one mandatory training session for the year. We encourage people to make this role their own. As part of your position, you will need to have collected and sent some feedback to us via the feedback form and have met with your Programme Lead once a term to be recognised for your work. You will need to action any feedback you are assigned by the Union. Outside of this we want people to make the position what they want.

What do I get out of it?

There are multiple benefits to the role however you would be able to say you have been in a student leadership position on your CV. You are also eligible for a student commendation at the Union Awards at the end of the year and even ‘Rep of the Year’. As Reps, this role means you are working to improve the student experience form the position of a student and not staff – hopefully actioning more democratic change in the process.
