    Union presence at Markeaton Street

    Expired
Markeaton street see's little or no activity from the Students Union. Most students aren't aware who the elected officers are, or even of who their fellow Student Representatives are. This leads to the problem of not knowing how to take actions when things upset them, or request new activities or events they'd like to see. This is hindering the fun, social aspect of University life for the students who are based here. Each site should be treated as a sister, not as a distant relative.

7:42am on 12 Dec 17 Thanks Amy, Laura and Emily. We have tried to do events down at Markeaton but they've not been successful, whether that is because they were not what students wanted, not promoted well enough or other reasons. We are keen to work with you to do more than offer just the union shop. This term we visited around 10 of your classes to celebrate your success of receiving 100% student satisfaction in the National Student Survey (with chocolates and balloons). We also started using the office next to the shop for drop-in hours from union staff. Next term we are hoping to promote them better, get more reps to do them also and get academic societies to use the space... but we will need you to work with us to develop the interactions you want. The Union, that has relatively few funded staff, covers more than 10 buildings across Buxton, Chesterfield and Derby and we have a relatively small staff. How it works best is student-led activities that we support - and we are very happy to do so, with potential funding for changes and events. The more students you get involved the more we will support it. We would love to have a Markeaton Students Society who would be eligible to get funding for events on going. You may want to include Brit Mill students also. We nearly got a Brit Mill society off of the ground earlier this year and that building is closer to Markeaton Street than the Sports Centre on Ked Road is to T block. You only need 3 students interested in leading this (3 have commented here already and you have seven votes!) - for more information contact vpcommunity@derbyunion.co.uk. You can find out who your reps are here - https://www.derbyunion.co.uk/change/academic/ There will be elections in February and we would love to have Markeaton students running for all positions. Please feel free to get in touch with me to discuss further. Dave Lochtie Student Voice and Development Manager, Union of Students david.lochtie@derbyunion.co.uk

7:47am on 12 Dec 17 ...just to add our One Friar Gate Square students do a newsletter, which is helping develop a community in that building. Would you like to do something similar?

10:39am on 12 Dec 17 I have spoken to colleagues in societies. Among the existing societies that meet at markeaton street regularly are...glee, gospel choir, musician and band, musical theatre, theatre, robotics, computing, fashion and textiles, Afro-Carribean Society, Radical Youth, Poetry Speaks and Adventists Students on Campus! We can work harder on getting Union branded things at these events so so you know it is your union that is there. If you are interested in getting involved with these societies please follow the link - https://www.derbyunion.co.uk/getinvolved/societies/ We would also love to set-up a Photography society, please feel free to let us know if you are interested.
