The number 5 will not be running after 30/06/18 and this will massively impact on hundreds of students living in this bus route. Not only is this an access need but also a safety issue for many students with late night lectures. Additionally, hundreds have students will have signed a tenancy on a house on this route thinking that they will be living on a bus route. This has not been thought through and is not acceptable, so we should be pressing the University to reinstate this service.

7:59pm on 5 Jul 18 I used the current number 5 service as I don't have to pay to park for uni. If this stays then getting a bus to town and then get a bus to uni is not worth it cost or time wise.

5:18pm on 16 Jul 18 This has been my bus route for the past two years and it was super helpful getting back from lectures at 9pm. They should have never got rid of it. More number six buses doesn’t help people who moved to be near this route.

5:40pm on 16 Jul 18 Just moved into a house that was originally on the route, after handing over a large chunk of money for rent I'm now regretting my decision after the news of the end of this bus route. Wish the uni had announced this earlier in the year and not as hundreds of students move into the area. With tight maintenance loans and expensive rent, the additional cost of buses into the centre and then to the uni is not one I can afford.

6:05pm on 16 Jul 18 Not having the number 5 will be extremely inconvenient for anyone who lives on the route, a lot of people who have signed for houses in that area have been on the basis of the bus. It’s in the interest of safety for students with late night lectures. Catching public transport will become costly very quickly and incredibly inconvenient as they are not designed to carry the vast volume of students who rely on the number 5 route

6:08pm on 16 Jul 18 I'm in the process of graduating, so this won't help me much. But I 100% back Abby on saying that it is an access matter for both late-night lectures and also disabled students who require the bus (I am hard-of-hearing). When I saw that this bus was being removed from service, I was disgraced at the University for doing such a thing as I live just off the route and many university lecturers and members of staff live in this area, using the bus on a frequent basis.

6:14pm on 16 Jul 18 Although I'll be finishing my time at the university shortly, I've used the Number 5 bus service throughout the four years I've studied at Derby even when not living in the Uttoxeter New Road area. This is unfair to current students who may have decided to rent property in that area on the basis of the transport link to the Kedleston campus, as it is a 30-40 minute walk away from that site and the costs of alternative transport would accumulate quickly.

6:34pm on 16 Jul 18 This is a MASSIVE mistake. Many students live on the uttoxeter new road areas in private rented accommodation. Now, they face at least 15-20 min walk for the unibus 6, increasing their journey time. Now graduating, i feel extremily sorry for the students who decided to live there with the knoweldge that the 5 would run. Not cool at all.

8:51pm on 16 Jul 18 I think this in a bad idea because the number 5 bus is utilized by a lot of students and those that are on placement (in my case nhs) need transport support in order to complete it effectively. I hope it gets put into place again because it was effective for both mature and undergrad students. Additionally it reduces traffic and air pollution therefore it helps protect the environment that the university keep promoting.

10:18am on 17 Jul 18 My housemates and I chose our third year student house due to the proximity to the Number 5 bus route as it provides safety to students travelling home during the winter/late in the day. It also provides these students with the ability to carry their uni supplies with ease from home to class. This bus was immensely helpful when I strained the rotator cuffs in both shoulders as I was in constant pain when my bag was on my arms, and would never have got to class had the bus not been there. Please bring back the 5!

6:26pm on 17 Jul 18 My house for next year is on the 5 route which I thought was a good idea until now!

3:32am on 18 Jul 18 Me and my 3 flat mates have a decided to move to a house for the 18/19 year and was perfect as the 5 bus stop was right across the road, now it’ll be an hour walk to and from the uni, and being part of a sports team, I will need a bus to get back in the evenings aswell as another one of my house mates! And later on in the year it won’t be as warm so walking in the cold or even heavy rain for an hour to get to uni is going to suck!

1:58pm on 19 Jul 18 For my course I have to transport equipment which is too heavy to walk with, and paying for a taxi quickly becomes expensive, I think the number 5 bus should be reinstated and a new timetable better to suite lectures at Ked road and Markeaton street as on the previous timetable you get there at the half hour or in the hour. Useless no? You should be able to get there 5 minutes early

3:12pm on 19 Jul 18 Of course certain factors like increased use for the 6 route have been taken into account. But ending the use of the route all together isn’t particularly ideal for anyone who would regularly use it or for people who have previously used the route, in particular when there is poor weather to get home in. Also the new students joining the university it won’t be ideal for those students either in terms of safety and convinience moving into a new place and giving them something else to have to worry about. Can adjustments to reduce buses on the 4 not be an option? Because its a very short route that many can walk quite easily.

6:25pm on 19 Jul 18 One of the things that contributed to me chosing the large shared house that I have for 2nd year, which is off of ashbourne road, was the nearby 5 bus stop. My deposit and fees were taken back in march and i was signed into a 11 month contract. Then the first rent quarter was due on the 20th June, also before I had heard of the cancelations. now it is fastest to walk to the keddleston campus through marketon park. The nearest bus stop is probably either the 4 or the 6/7 stop at the top of friars gate. Which is impractical late at night or for those with disabilities or injuries. Studying Dance the bus was a great facility that helped me feel more able to get to and be involved with main campus life and societies despite the fatigue from my course and the fact that it is based of campus

11:10pm on 19 Jul 18 Thankfully I have just graduated so won't need to rely on the uni buses anymore however if it weren't for the number 5 during first and second year I would not have made it to any of my lectures. Its an absolute insult to all students living on the route of the 5 removing the service. The uni had improved access for all by making the buses free and have now taken away a key route. I am shocked at this decision and contest the alternative journeys suggested. If the university is to support all students and be inclusive, the number 5 service must be reinstated.

4:03pm on 20 Jul 18 I’m going into second year this September, when looking for a house through various estate agents, this was one of their biggest appeals to the properties in that area. Subsequently, we placed a large deposit to now be stuck in a 48 week contact, whereby we cannot safely get to and from University, especially with the winter nights vastly approaching. I understand that the University has suggested to walk to Markeaton Street, and get the no.4 shuttle bus from there. However, for most people that’s a 20/25 minute walk in the dark from the bus stop - if we were to have a lecture finish at 9PM. Not only is this putting your students safety at risk, it’s also disregarding all second and third years who have housing in that area. Does this mean you only wish to accommodate to first years living in halls? For the protection of your students I would urge you to reinstall the number 5 bus. Thank you.

2:41pm on 26 Jul 18 I don’t believe ending the number 5 bus is a particularly good idea as the route it takes goes to areas where there are many privately rented student houses, especially down uttoxeter new road. I also believe it is the only bus which goes closest to the hospital where many students attend placement. The public transport in derby is good however, it works out to be quite costly and from experience a lot of people relied on this bus so unless another bus which is still running is to pick up in these areas then I think the number 5 should be brought back! Thank you

1:03am on 27 Jul 18 I think the service can be stoped during the holidays BUT not during term periods. This is really not fair for students not living in halls. They should take account their safety as well. Some would have to walk in the dark to get home because they can’t afford to take any other buses. The uni shouldn’t only focus on student living in halls. The bus 7 and bus 4 should be combine in only 1 bus and keep the 5.
