Fine Arts students pay over £9000 a year in fees yet they are still expected to pay out of their own pocket for any resources they may need to use. Paying for these resources cuts into living expenses, and the cost goes into the hundreds every term. These resources should be free, and if not, there should be a substantial grant towards the cost.

7:26pm on 28 Mar 19 This was mentioned within a recent rep meeting, one of the suggestions made was replacing the blackwells voucher with an alternative benefit, such as a hobbycraft voucher, or access to the adobe suite. I'll support this, though possible suggestions on what would benefit most would be needed.

5:16pm on 1 Jul 19 I am on the Fine Art Photography course and the costs for our essential items needed to meet the criteria for our body of work such as film /negatives, (up to £44 for 12 for Wista cameras) photographic paper, at £25+ per pack of 50 (if you can find it on offer) digital prints (anywhere above £100+) it costs us a huge amount. Why we don't have an in house shop where we can buy on site is beyond me. The person who comes in for us to buy from is a nice guy however he travels from up north which is not good for the Uni's carbon footprint and is making a good profit, (usually it costs half or just over half the retail price at wholesale). Why the Uni doesn't have an on site shop which is either heavily subsidised or priced with smaller profit margins (even if its run from a broom cupboard) is not an impossibility. Some students who have had a particular problem with darkroom printing have run out of Paper and have no way of buying more unless we order from ebay or other sites, usually it may be just a couple of more sheets but we have to buy boxes and then wait a couple of days for delivery. this is not good if you have a crit the next day. (not happened to me yet thankfully, but it has happened to some). As for the Blackwells voucher I agree I would like a voucher for photographic papers, or even a credit on my account at either of the print shops in MS Street. Art based courses are more expensive than other courses, for example many will require just access to books, which they can choose to use the Library facilities and keep a larger portion of their Uni money for living costs, Arts based students have no choice or alternative, this doesn't seem a fair and equal system when comparing courses and outlaying costs side by side. My partner has just completed his foundation year and has purchased 2 books for the whole year, his reading list for his Degree can be serviced via the library, my equipment/reading list for the first year of my degree cost so much money and we both get the same funds for living costs, go figure.
