With high numbers of students coming into lectures late causing disruption, this idea will allow lecturers to refuse entry to students who come into lectures more than 15 minutes late without good reason. This will ensure that students arrive at lectures on time to minimise disruption to other students who have turned up on time. The University of Derby wants to promote professional behaviour so students are ready for the workplace, this rule will promote this professional behaviour.

5:52pm on 11 Dec 19 If a lecturer wants to turn a student away to avoid disruption, the lecturer should have the fearlessness to do so, regardless of having an official rule in place. The instigator of this petition has suggested that the rule “will ensure that students arrive at lectures on time.” That is a matter of opinion. It could also encourage higher levels of absence. It is possible that the rule could encourage students who know they are going to be late, to skip the lecture or even the whole day altogether. It is my opinion that rules like this can create complications, rather than allowing lectures to manage lectures in a manner they deem appropriate.

10:38pm on 12 Dec 19 I agree with Adam. Aswell what would you like to state is a good reason? Many factors can complicate this. Lecturers can turn students away now. If you have an issue with disruption, speak to your lecturer and let them know.

2:36pm on 14 Dec 19 Also students with medical reasons to be late consistently would be denied the right to attend their lectures then as they can't help it. I personally have on my support plan for lecturers to not make a fuss about me turning up late due to medical reasons. Refusing people late entry into lectures due to stuff like the bus being late which isn't their fault which is ridiculous. Most people who are late try not to be disruptive when they come in late anyway. Also sometimes things happen out of people's control that make them late and I don't see why they should have to be penalised.

5:04pm on 19 Jan 20 This already takes place on my degree program. Students are allowed 10 min Lee-way, After 10 mins they have to wait for the break. Good reasons for being more than 10 mins late are normally travel disruption (busses, trains, road), however, the lecturer has some choice in what to accept. Plus my program states you have to inform the lecturer (either email or via a student). We now have no students arriving later than 10 mins

10:42am on 19 Feb 20 We already have a system in place on the occupational therapy course. If you are late by 1minute after the start time and the lecture has started then you have to wait outside of the door until the lecturer let's you in - usually at a point in the lecture that it is convenient such as the end of a slide etc. It has worked really well and means that students aren't being distracted by a continuous flow of students coming in late. There is no 'blame' or 'judgement' associated with the people coming in late but they do have to wait until they are invited in. If they don't and just come in then they will be sent an email or asked to wait outside. Its worked really well this year and has encouraged students to manage their time affectively whilst also allowing for when the unexpected happens. It is a universal policy that has been rolled out across the course.
