As the percentage of the population using food banks increases both nationally and locally, it is now important more than ever to help out those in need. Left over food from stores and canteens on site that is near its expiry date or about to be thrown out should be either donated to local food banks or, the uni should open a food bank for students to access due to less student temp jobs being available, the pandemic & lack of funds / increasing costs of living on campus.

12:09pm on 16 Feb 21 Good Afternoon and thanks for the ideas post. As a Union we have worked to ensure we make the best use of our food wastage during the pandemic, although this has become limited due to the lack of outlets we have open currently. However, at the start of the pandemic we ensured all of our food waste was distributed to those who need it. Over £2,000 worth of food was given to a local charity that distributed food packs to the local area, whilst the remaining items were given out to halls of residence to support those isolating who may have needed supplies. We did however encounter issues with food that had already gone past its 'best before' date as a large number of food banks will not take this due to the logistical issues of giving it out, with agreements needed that people are aware of the date.
