I got the U1 bus once but was so overcrowded I now walk from the train station to friar gate and I can actually walk quicker than the bus however as the weather is getting colder and wetter it would be nice if the bus was less crowded and more regular. I always walk back after lectures as the bus times don’t work with my lectures and trains as a commuting student.

7:30pm on 8 Oct 21 The U1 buses last week was really bad students pushed on the road jumping through the middle doors people being pushed to the back the students are fustrated and annoyed and the bus drivers are not happy as they are counting students getting on and they all pushing through and then students are more angry this situation is not good and the recent changes have not included the U1 which is the one needs sorting out !

2:57pm on 9 Oct 21 I cannot believe that the bus which goes to the train station is staying the same, I am a commuter student travelling from Sheffield, and it is taking me 6 hours now to get to the campus and then back home again! Yesterday 8/10/21 my lecture finished at 4pm and by the time I reached the bus stop the bus was full. I then had to wait a further 20 minutes for the next one and the bus quickly filled up, which is not good with this pandemic, I then ended up getting home at 7pm! This is a total outrage to expect commuter students who depend on these buses to have to now set off much earlier just to make sure they can get to a lecture on time.

11:19am on 13 Oct 21 I wanted to travel by train, but now i either have to get in early and endure overcrowding on the bus which is uncomfortable and unsafe re covid. Or i get the train then wait at station for 50 mins for the U1 and to then at end of the day leave uni and wait for an overcrowded U1 ( if i cant get on it) to then miss the train connection and have to wait another hour for that too. Its a lot of waiting around alone which i deem as unsafe. So now i have to drive and pay at markeaton park which work out more expensive than the train when factoring in fuel and parking fees. Plus i thought the whole point of this was to make transport more sustainable and environmentally friendly. Not the case when students are having to drive!. I really Hope that the bus drivers have actually been consulted in this process. as its not fair on them and they are seeing first hand the problems.

9:13am on 15 Oct 21 Comment from anonymous student who set up a repeat idea "I have classes that start at half past which means I'd have to come sit in uni for an hour instead of just being on time. Or I'll be late"

3:57pm on 18 Oct 21 The U1 timetable definitely needs to improve. As a disabled student and speaking as your disabled students officer, I can say that the changes also have huge accessibility implications, as others have also pointed out. Overcrowding of the buses isn’t safe seeing as we’re still in a pandemic, and can cause extra anxieties for vulnerable students. Walking to uni if the bus is full also isn’t an option for many disabled students, and neither is waiting for multiple buses if the bus is full. It also doesn’t feel safe making students walk, particularly as it’s getting darker, colder and wetter, considering the walk from Kedleston Road to the train station is around an hour. Personally, as a commuter student, I’m currently either getting a taxi to uni or getting one of my parents to drop me off, as the thought of getting the bus in their current state is far too time consuming and anxiety inducing, but this isn’t a good enough option as it takes away peoples independence and public transport is also the only way for some students to get to uni.
