    "Preferred" names at Uni Halls

    Passed
    • Wellbeing
    • Accessibility
The process of getting a "preferred" name put on the uni system is already difficult. However, these changes do not effect the whole uni system. Those who have altered their names can request a change of email name and uni-card. However the halls system does not recognise these changes. So you have students with uni ID that is not recognised at uni sites that are responsible for your postage and packaging. This is especially difficult for trans students who cannot formally change their names.

7:30pm on 30 Apr 20 Thanks all for your ideas which are actively taken into account by the Union of Student Executive Committee. Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the Union of Students are facing unprecedented financial times with the closure of our commercial outlets. As a result a number of Union staff have been placed on furlough leave and our Full TIme Officers are responding directly to student voice related to the impact of COVID-19 on student wellbeing and experience. During this time we cannot hold a summit to review ideas and in the short term it is unlikely unrelated ideas will be actioned. They will however not be forgotten, remain live and will be returned to whenever we are able. We appreciate your patience.

1:03pm on 4 Oct 21 *PASSED* & implemented. The Director of Derby Student Residence Ltd (DSRL), the halls provider for the University of Derby, confirmed in September 2021 that: "the Halls system does allow students to use their preferred name. The approach we adopt is that we use preferred names on all informal messaging but their legal name on official correspondence" this is to ensure that the legalities of any contract are reflected in any official correspondence.
