First Aid and Mental Health Training

All Allied-Health and Social Care subjects should be First Aid and Mental Health trained. The people that they work with could experience physical health problems, resulting in a need for awareness of first aid training, or actions. Additionally, these subjects work with people experiencing mental health issues, and so a basic awareness is essential to provide support. This would improve the curriculum as students would be prepared for their placements and their careers.

9:35am on 8 Oct 19 This is crucial not only for Health and Social Care but I think for all courses, I think my course could really benefit from this as a lot of people have come to me as a Programme Rep in regards to how they are spoken to and feel under pressure. Completely aware that university is hard, but compassion and empathy is crucial for a person's wellbeing!

8:41am on 10 Oct 19 Definately agree Jade. Also alongside this, offering up this training to other staff and students. Including in induction week a basic presentation about where fire exits are and defibrillators (assuming there are some).

8:05pm on 12 Oct 19 A very important idea - mental health awareness is a must amongst all health and Social Care courses but so is the need to be trained in how to respond and deal with it. It would be fab if we could have a model similar to the Dementia Friends scheme - Train up health and Social Care students with experience, to deliver Mental Health Friends training to other areas and courses. Spreads awareness and builds skills at the same time. Crackin job jade, keep it up :D

8:35am on 14 Oct 19 I became a Mental Health First Aid Instructor as a result of my experiences in my first degree (which took me a decade to face up to and conquer). Mental Health training and awareness can also go hand in hand with the student rep programme. A great idea Jade, good luck and let me know if I can help in any way. - Andy.
