I would like to see childcare facilities within the university for student parents. This could offer experience to students on childcare courses also :)

9:18pm on 7 Oct 19 Loughborough University has a childcare unit on campus, open for both staff and students, so it's definitely possible!

9:20pm on 7 Oct 19 Great idea! Would be very helpful for student parents.

9:21pm on 7 Oct 19 Amazing! Something the university should definitely start thinking about and making plans to have something like this. ??

12:10am on 8 Oct 19 Great idea - but playing devil's advocate here, would this need to be applied to all campus' for sake of equality- e.g. Chesterfield campus is all healthcare courses, predominantly mature students with families - even some of the younger students have children. Paying the same fee for the same course as the Derby campus and could mean no-one chooses the Chesterfield campus to study at if this was provided. Maybe we don't need to rule out having the provision at other locations - and therefore could be an option to look into for all sites? I do think it is a valid point that Derby might be losing out on students where childcare is an issue and other Uni's have the provision though...

8:51am on 8 Oct 19 I'm a PTO trying to get this in the motions! In order to get this done, we need lots of people to agree with this motion, so let's get this popular!! Some things to consider: In order to ensure safeguarding, the child creche would have to be a separate building to that of the main building, however, this will be an amazing space for childcare, paediatrics and other professionals to do placement and get that valuable experience! The money for the building would soon be back in the universities pocket! Quite a few universities have this amazing facility, such as Loughborough University (as Nina pointed out), University of Portsmouth, University of Bristol, University of Leicester, Birmingham City University, University of Warwick, University of Nottingham, Staffordshire University. These are all BIG competitors of the university! Not to mention that many of them are within close proximity to Derby so, even more competition! Did you know that we lost a lot of entries through clearing, due to childcare? Think of how much more people we would entice if we had this facility for the growing population of parent students!

11:51pm on 12 Oct 19 Fantastic idea! This would improve the University's accessibility. Additionally it could become a paediatric placement for OT students, and other allied health and social care courses!

8:23pm on 13 Oct 19 Absolutely brilliant idea... Bring funds back into uni and help to give placement experience for students.. I would defo support this cause and even do some voluntary work myself as I am a qualified level 3 early years practitioner and currently studying child & family health and wellbeing at Derby uni so wonder if this could be used as my placement??? Not sure but an absolutely brilliant idea ??

2:09pm on 15 Oct 19 Congratulations ! Your Idea has reached over 25 up-votes and is therefore going to be debated and decided on at Summit. Summit is a meeting to which all Derby students are invited where the final vote is made on an Idea from the Ideas Forum as to whether it should pass and be actioned or be voted against. This year, Summit is being held on 27th November in OL2 at Kedleston Road Campus and is open for all students to come along and vote! If the vote passes at Summit, the Union of Students must endeavour to action this idea! Just some things to consider – Where would a childcare facility be placed in an already cramped campus like Ked Road? Is this the best use of space? What would proposed child-care look like, a drop in crèche? Full nursery facilities? Would there be fees, and if so, how much? What are your thoughts? Come along to Summit to debate this and vote and make sure YOUR voice is heard!! For more information please contact me at laura.maher@derbyunion.co.uk

9:04am on 28 Nov 19 Yesterday this idea was taken to Student Summit and voted on by over 100 students. I am very pleased to say that your idea was passed, with 81 students voting for this idea. Congratulations!!! What this means is that we, the Union of Students, will attempt to action this idea as soon as possible for the remainder of this academic year and a further 3 years. Whilst this doesn’t mean the idea will necessarily become a reality, it means we will do our best to make it happen over this time period, encouraging the University to take action on your idea to make it a reality. We will post updates on our website and our full time officers will give updates at our Scrutiny Panels (which happen 6 times per year – check out our Facebook events to see when the next panel you can attend is.) If you have any questions about any part of this, please contact me at laura.maher@derbyunion.co.uk and thank you again for using your voice to make a change and allowing the Union to represent your interests.

10:34am on 26 Jan 21 From Vice President Welfare Emily Lane, "This idea has been in the works for a while. Due to students not being on campus it has been put on hold by the University. However, discussions are still taking place and currently they are looking at breastfeeding spaces on campuses for both staff and student. Going forward I will try and push the discussion to childcare with the possibility of partnering with existing childcare organisations."
