My Manifesto
Psychology. Its not just a word but it’s something that I have chosen and have dedicated myself to study for the next 3 upcoming years. My name is Sualiha Khan, and I am interested in becoming a Psychology Officer. I have been involved in many medical work experiences before coming to the University of Derby like shadowing doctors. This made me reflect the pressure people face in their daily lives.
I enjoy reading and one of the books which still makes me ponder till this day is Kalanithi's book 'When Breath Becomes Air,'. The quote "What makes human life meaningful even in the face of decay?" taught me that He had went through the five stages of grief – the denial, anger, bargaining, depression, acceptance. This made me realise that no matter the authority of someone, mental health problems are inevitable. This awoke my initial interest in making a positive change in helping others mentally and making them feel that they are worth something. As I come from a South Asian Community, Mental Health Problems are suppressed and have no meaning, however, I would like to grow more relevance into this. During my time in Bilborough College, as I was a student ambassador, I organised open days and other such events. I displayed excellent communication and leadership as I helped both teaching professionals and students alike. Similarly, I still have the diligence and willingness to take challenges with the ambition of continue learning and helping. I have previously volunteered at a geriatric care home where I spent time with the residents and shadowed carers. This allowed me to appreciate the elderly, and this led me to establish my own medical debating enrichment at my college where I had discussed many topics surrounding the prevalence of loneliness in the elderly.

What I want to achieve?
Sense of Community
- Introducing such events that improve the moods of others. For those who may feel as if they don’t have anyone to talk to, for those who feel lonely and anxious and for those who simply want to join the fun. The memories they may make will be meaningful and will improve their mental health. For example, there could be Poetry events where people can express their words and Culture Day events where people can get involved by representing their cultures.
Relevance of the Student Union
- Direct communication through sessions every week between students and the Union. Also having some type of social media group where students can maintain contact by easily asking questions and getting quicker replies, like on WhatsApp.
Exploring alternatives
- People who may suffer from such disabilities may find it harder to communicate hence why I will listen and make their opinions feel worthy by making their recommendations more accessible for them.
