I have chosen to nominate myself for the Events Manager role due to my interest in music and the events surrounding it! I have a background in both performing and events: Before University i was part of a Secondary School/Sixth Form Band, performing and playing Rhythm guitar at multiple school concerts including open evenings, Multi-School music nights and most notably a performance at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, the birthplace of the Beatles! Along with a previous job as events staff for music and sports events around Birmingham, I would say I have been exposed to the benefits of having the opportunity to perform.
If elected for the role of Events Manager, I would aim to:
Schedule in more gigs/sessions for the new year - So far there the gigs have been really well received, both from participants and people watching. The more gigs, the more experience and more time that we all get to perform during the year
Build relationships with different venues and groups in Derby so the society has multiple opportunities to perform - Festival season will be upon us before we know it, which gives a massive opportunity for upcoming artists and bands. As well as this, Derby has many venues for open mic nights/acoustic sets so there is big potential for the society.
Create a structure for sessions and gigs - We have a very talented group at the minute with varying instruments and skills! This is great as it gives the society the opportunity to experiment with what genres and group sizes work well within the sessions, and with this we can look to start practicing material for future gigs further in advance, which in turn will help pre-plan gig set lists and sound checks so we all have more time to perfect what we want to play for the big night!
Promote and organise events for the society - Due to the musician and band society being a new society, it currently has a small prescence within the university. However, i feel that the society has great potential to attract more musicians to the scene! In partnership with the Social Secretary I would look at getting the society more involved within the union through multiple mediums: charity sports events like the recent charity netball, socials and partnerships with other societies being some examples.
