Manifesto for Secretary
Megan Kings
My name is Megan Kings, I am a second-year Law student and I would like to be considered for the secretary role within the University of Derby Student Law Society. Below is my manifesto which I will outline why I feel I would be a suitable candidate.
Introduction
As a second-year law student and having spent this time as an active member of the University of Derby Law Society; I have been welcomed by fellow colleagues.
Since July 2023 I have been interim secretary for the Law Society, within this time I undertook the responsibilities that this role requires. Participated in several events for the society. In this time, I have filled risk assessments, event forms and posters. Attending all the events held by the society dedicating time specifically to aid the members of the student Law Society.
I would like to put myself up for the candidate role as secretary, I believe I would be able to contribute to the success and growth of our law society. If elected I would pledge to continue to work diligently, communicate effectively, and implement positive change for the benefit of all members. As I have been since starting the role in July.
My Aims
In this role I would aim to ensure that clear and open communication is a priority both in verbal and written information and that all members are actively involved in the decisions.
As the secretary I would understand the importance of professionalism and discretion. I would handle confidential information with the utmost care, I would also continue to hold high ethical standards, treating all individuals with respect and fairness that law society holds within their values.
I aim to be proactive problem solver rather than waiting for issues to arise. I will endeavour to anticipate potential challenges and address them in a non-conferential approach with active listening and conflict resolutions and ensure that the law society upholds its high standard and reputation.
As the secretary, time and task management is a vital skill. I would prioritize tasks, manage my calendar efficiently. I would set realistic deadlines whilst maintaining flexibility to accommodate all circumstances.
I would continue to improve my own skills where needed and seek feedback as a member of the team. I would also be adaptable in any situation the growth of the law society.
My Experiences
Recently I Have been fortunate to Join the Student Union Societies Council as a societies Councillor. Within this role I am able to work closely with the union in ensuring communication and feedback to enhance students university experience. By attending regular meetings, and advocating for the views of the students with the union of students.
Whilst in college, I became a key role member for MakatonLDND.
MakatonLDND is abbreviated for Makaton learning disability nursing degree which is a petition that started in 2020. The petition aims to make Makaton mandatory on all learning disability degrees.
Within this role as ambassador and secretary I have contributed and developed skills: to designing merchandise, setting up social media pages, websites, and ambassador blog co presenting presentations.
During my role I am visiting schools, universities and colleges to discuss the MakatonLDND campaign to talk about inclusive rights and equalities.
We have just been recognised for our work on awareness by The National Learning Disabilities & Autism Award 2023 “and been shortlisted for Breaking Down Barrier Individual Award”.
Prior to becoming a key member for MakatonLDND, I was the student leader for the support group called Coaching Help Advice Talk (CHAT) for four years. CHAT offered students at my secondary school an opportunity to have a safe and private space to address bullying and mental health problems. The aims of CHAT are to provide students with a platform to report their problems without feeling overwhelmed when speaking to teachers or staff members. Thereby breaking the barrier between students and staff. During my time volunteering with CHAT, we collaborated with The Diana Award's anti-bullying program, which aims to raise awareness about bullying and encourage young people to get involved in tackling it across the UK. This enabled me to develop safeguarding, confidentiality, campaign planning, implementing resources and motivational techniques.
As a part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award, I contacted my local community centre and supported local run groups within the community centre. Whilst I was there I heard a lot of decisions on the need to update their toilets, I offered to re paint them. In addition to my work experience I felt that it was important to give back to my community. This was recognised by the Dudley south MP who presented me with an Award to the local community. This experience has given me key communication skills, co operational techniques.
Conclusion
In conclusion I would like to thank you for reading my manifesto and with your support I am confident that I am the right candidate for the secretary position. I would continue to foster an inclusive community and strengthen the bonds among the societies and the student union. In continue My position within the Law society.
