Abbie Smith

My Manifesto
My name is Abbie Smith, and I am in the final year of my part-time MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Science (Psychology Award). As course representative for the last two years, I have represented the needs and issues of students within my school and voiced these at relevant opportunities, such as the Human Sciences Programme Committee meeting. As the University of Derby Badminton Club’s President, I have organised and chaired committee meetings, collated feedback from members and used this to develop the club. As PAL Lead for my discipline, I have supported first and foundation-year students with settling into University whilst also addressing any challenges they may experience. I am passionate about using student feedback to implement lasting changes to improve University experience.
If elected, I aim to:

• Adopt a student-led approach – experiences of issues or challenges are different for every student; therefore, I cannot speak for you if I do not speak to you first. I am always keen to learn and grow from others and am open to feedback so long as it is constructive!
• Bridge the gap between staff and students – Hold monthly meetings with course representatives and academic staff to collect and deliver feedback with the aim of facilitating frequent and effective communication between parties.
• Promote reading week activities and applied opportunities - Encourage students to attend reading week activities and engage in applied opportunities as methods of developing extracurricular qualities and skills.
• Facilitate cross-course study groups – Provide an opportunity for students to engage in multi-disciplinary learning by hosting study groups that bring students together from different year groups and courses.

I am an initiative-taking, dependable, and willing individual offering a broad skill set for this role, including excellent communication skills and a desire to represent the voices of fellow students. I adopt a positive outlook and am keen to make a difference.

I can only be effective in this role with the help of your vote, so if you support my aims, please vote for me!
