Profile
Hello, my name is Katie and I’m in my first year of studying on the BSc Occupational Therapy programme. I’m currently a programme representative and involved with the Occupational Therapy Society (DOTS).
I would like to run for the Allied-Health Professional Officer role. If elected, I would work towards making sure that allied-health students have a visual representation across the university, and I’d be pro-active in raising those issues and matters that are important to the students I’m representing.
Aims
- Create and develop workshops in collaboration with the careers service and wellbeing services. These to be tailored initially towards students entering the allied-health profession with a focus on building resilience, emotional intelligence, tools around circles of control, conflict resolution and developing a routine for managing your own mental health;
- Develop and provide further interprofessional learning opportunities across the college to enhance knowledge of other professions;
- Explore opportunities to involve the community within the university, to promote wellbeing on a wider scale and provide volunteering opportunities for students; for example, by utilising the outdoor spaces to host community socials, allotment spaces, and for fundraising.
Suitability and Experience
I have chosen to return to university having previously studied at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels and I’ve had professional careers in ecological consultancy and university administration. As I’ve been both a younger and now mature student, I understand some of the potential pressures and concerns that students may experience at different life stages. I also know some of the demands and pressures experienced by newly qualified graduates within a regulated professional working environment.
As a university administrator, I have attended university meetings and panels as well as minuting and actively taking part. I am confident that I can be pro-active and represent the ‘student voice’ at such meetings. With my background in university administration, I am aware of the processes and procedures that take place behind the scenes. I have experience of supporting students including those with protected characteristics that at times, needed support, guidance, information and a point of contact to access the services available. This experience partly influenced my decision to return to university as a mature student and enrol on an allied-health course.
I am hardworking, professional, trustworthy and I have excellent communication skills including a willingness to actively listen to any concerns and feedback that students may have. I believe that I can undertake this role in a manner that positively reflects and promotes the contributions and successes that students on allied-health professional courses already demonstrate. If elected, I would continue the work in promoting our student voices at university wide level.
