TYLAE CLOSE

NUS DELEGATE

profile

My name is Tylae Close, I am currently a second year student on the youth work and community development degree based at Kedleston Road.

I’ve got a passion for social justice, tackling inequality and raising your voice on a national level. The NUS is one of the biggest lobbying organisations in the country with the power to change things for students.

Therefore, I am running to be NUS Delegate so that I can give everyone from the University of Derby a voice so that we can support and change policy for it to positively empower Derby students.

I want to be your NUS delegate because I:

  • Believe that Derby students are amongst the best in the country and that their voices should be heard nationally;
  • Understand how challenging some students find university and want to help make those students journeys a little bit easier so that we all get the most out of our time at the University of Derby;
  • Will lobby for Derby students, and believe that Derby students are entitled to receiving the best possible university experience.

Key Aims

  • I will support a national education campaign, making sure that all students of all abilities receive the support that they require;
  • I will say no to racism, homophobia, xenophobia and any other form of prejudice;
  • I will lobby for an increase in bursaries available to healthcare students, DSA and postgraduate students;
  • I will vote for an NUS that represents all ethnic minorities, LGBTQIA+ and international students, so that together we can stand up against government restriction and intimidation;
  • I will vote for a greener and more ethical union that supports all of us, no matter our characteristics or beliefs.

My time at the University of Derby

During my time as a student here, I have tried to get involved with as many different groups as possible, hearing out peoples ideas and beliefs from the different societies that Derby has to offer and by speaking and interacting with students. I am currently a programme representative for Youth Work and Community Development – Stage 2. A big part of that role involves me hearing what my peers think of the degree and looking at the barriers to learning that they face, which I then present to the lecturing team. I’m also a Residential Assistant at Cathedral Court halls of residence where I have been lucky enough to meet and interact with hundreds of students, supporting their needs and empowering them to get the most out of their time here at Derby. I understand the needs, barriers and accelerators that the different communities and cultures here at Derby face in the context of tackling inequality and getting the best possible experience at every level. As one of your NUS delegate’s, I’ll lobby on behalf of everyone I’ve worked with at Derby and will try my hardest to ensure that students from the University of Derby have their voices heard and their concerns raised at the national level.
