Owen Marques
Part-time Officer - Human Sciences
Who am I?
My name is Owen, I am currently a 2nd year student on the Forensic Science degree based in Derby at Kedleston Road campus. Simply put, I’m a vibrant and energetic individual determined to get the most out of life, making sure that I put my unique positive twist on almost every aspect of my life and those around me. My life experiences have allowed me to become the confident and caring person I am today, I know what it means to be heard and valued, and I know I can make the changes to make the most out of YOUR university experience.
Why me?
One of my biggest strong suits is my confidence and drive to always get involved, striving to take any opportunity to better myself and the world around me. I’m strong minded and willing to take charge to fight for the ideas and beliefs for myself and others. Having confidence to do so allows me to express people’s views without sacrificing the value it holds.
I find myself always doing what I can to help those who need it and give whatever advice I can which is why I think I would be well suited for this role. I believe that my confident personality will allow me to express views on behalf of my peers to better the university and student experience in general. I believe that I am a good listener and can remain open-minded towards all different ideas and always strive to resolve issues in the best manner possible.
Being an opportunistic person, I see the world in a different light and there is no one specific path for students to take at university. I find myself working outside the box both in academics and my personal life, which is an important trait to have when you want to help others. Every student at the university is unique in their own way, including myself. Therefore, I strive to help meet the needs of all students in relation to learning styles, support etc.
During my time at the University of Derby I have taken on many responsibilities that will strengthen my ability to carry out this role:
- Student representative for Forensic Science for two years has provided me valuable skills and understanding with improving student experience. With the part-time officer role being one step up from this I know I can express student concerns and feedback, ensuring they are being heard.
- Dodgeball sports committee has given me a true sense of responsibility, teamwork and leadership.
- Student ambassador has allowed me to express my confidence in new and exciting way, with each day being a new experience, but more importantly being able to represent the university.
The untapped potential of the university requires someone with the optimism, passion and drive to want to improve student life for each individual. My strong expressive nature is the kind of trait that will allow each student to be heard and valued.
My Key Aims:
- Increased support for students through improving the set standard of support given by academics, ensuring no student is disadvantaged by any lack of support in all areas of your study.
- Practical learning is an invaluable experience that students can’t get outside of the university. By taking advantage of the facilities that the university already has, increasing the frequency of these being used (specialist labs, strength and conditioning suite, analytical instruments, crime scene house etc.)
- Providing more real-life experiences focuses on taking the learning outside the everyday lecture room using external organisations that the university is already linked with, in turn, creating more work experience, internships and placement opportunities.
YOUR time here at university is valuable! Make it count and vote for the change YOU want to see!
