Hey guys! My name is Tay Baverstock, and I am standing for the position of Part Time Officer for Human Sciences because I believe that I have the ability to improve many factors within the department, such as communication and cooperation. I know that I can also improve the morale of students by giving them consistent support and encouragement that they need at University. We are all going through this journey together, and I want to make sure that I can do the most that I can to reassure and guide my peers in many new and exciting ways.

On a personal level, many know me to be welcoming, approachable and honest. It is my belief that one of the most crucial factors of having such a large audience is to ensure that they can trust you, and I have no doubts that this is something I can give to you. A reason why I am more trustworthy against others is that I always keep conversations confidential between myself and students, and I do not pass on information unless it is an absolutely necessity. In addition, my passion, dedication, and drive are shown in all my previous work, and I want to utilise these in this role to really make some astonishing changes. I always have a smile on my face, and I hope that I can reflect that onto others, because being happy is so vital but often overlooked.

In terms of experience, I have already had the responsibility of previous leadership roles throughout my time in education, such as House captain, Team captain and now, Programme Representative for Biomedical Health. From these, I have developed many strong skills, such as my confidence to succeed, communicational skills and adaptability. This therefore symbolises that I can always lead this role effectively with a large attention to detail, thus making me the perfect candidate.

If elected, I would aspire to complete the following goals for the department:

  • A new method of communication that reaches students more efficiently. I know that by creating a social media page for the department, it can increase the amount of recognition from students on upcoming events and important news updates. It is essential that we utilise something like this to our advantage, and I believe this will be a very successful hub for the cohort. Out of 24 people that responded to a recent SurveyMonkey I created, 75% of those responded to say that Instagram would be the best way to share information, followed by 46% voting Facebook and 12.5% voting Twitter.

  • Introducing drop-in sessions at select times of the week, every week. It is necessary that I create time to respond to student queries in a well regulated and secure way. With these sessions, I would ensure to record these and post them on an accessible site, so that students can watch these back at their leisure.

  • To establish study sessions. I have noticed in my time as Programme Representative that it is very frustrating for students when they cannot completely understand content in a lecture/module. By enabling these sessions, we can benefit each-other in understanding the tasks better. Ideally, I would love the future Programme Representatives of each year group to manage this, as well as myself.
