Arvin Johal – Part Time Officer (Derby Business School)

My name is Arvin Johal, I am currently a 2nd year student studying a BA (Hons) in Business Management and based at the Kedleston Road campus. I have been a Course Representative for both years that I have been at the University of Derby and will carry on with the role throughout 3rd year. From being in this role, I have developed a number of skills and experience which will make me a suitable individual to take on the role as a Part Time Officer for the Derby Business School.

Being in this role has enabled me to see changes implemented throughout the University which gives hope that student voices will be heard, and changes will be considered and applied where necessary. These changes can be either small or big, with all changes presenting a positive impact to both the University staff and students. I am a determined individual who loves to hear what students have to say regarding their experience whether it being positive or negative. If negatives issues arise, I shall ensure I tackle individual concerns by striving for the best possible solution in every situation. I would love to create change in many ways and by becoming a Part Time Officer will allow me to take any problems, concerns and issues you may have to a higher level to ensure that your University experience is impeccable.

Therefore, I would love to run for the Part Time Officer in the Derby Business School department with the aims to:

  • Ensure all students are satisfied with the teaching on all modules.
  • Raise problems, concerns and issues with higher level staff members via email and/or meetings (guaranteeing a positive outcome on individual cases).
  • Be an alternative option for students to turn to when and if they should feel like it may be dauting to approach staff members.

During my time as a student at the University of Derby I put my eggs in many different baskets to get a taste of what different extracurricular programmes, schemes and activities I can get involved with. Here are just a few positions I have fulfilled which would make me the ideal vacant for this role:

  • Course Representative – working closely with students on my course by gathering feedback about how the course is going and raising any concerns students have in the Business College meetings.
  • Marketing Representative – I work with those in the Marketing department to come up with new and innovative ways of marketing the University.
  • Student Ambassador – I work alongside the Marketing department and Widening Access Team to help promote Higher Education and the University of Derby to prospective school and college students. I work with students from year 7 to 13 promoting the idea of Higher Education by using informative presentations, workshops, activities and visit days including working on Open Days giving campus tours.
  • Unibuddy Ambassador – I am part of a platform that the University offers to prospective students. I answer questions about life as a student as well as general queries about our courses, accommodation and city.
  • Secretary of Punjabi Society – I am the secretary for this society and run events, increase members knowledge of the Punjabi culture and market the society on social media.

This is just a glimpse of the relevant experience I have and what I intent to do if I am to fulfil the vacancy as the Part Time Officer for the Derby Business School.
