Lori Jeria-Medina

Hi there!

My name is Lori Jeria-Medina. I am a first year student studying Forensic Psychology at the University of Derby. It’s nice to meet you! I would be delighted if I could be considered as a representative for students with disabilities, and would like to assist in the form of being the new part time officer in this department.

I have always had a passion for helping others, and I would like my career path to take me down a road that leads to change in certain views towards disabilities, especially within the criminal justice system. Less stigma, more understanding, and more opportunities for people like us.

Navigating through the various challenges that we face when we first come to university, as well as during our time here, can be really difficult. I believe even more so for those with disabilities. I myself am diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and panic disorder, which has made my journey into university life a challenging one. New environments, not being aware of the levels of accessibility, the large crowds, meeting new people and socialising can all be so overwhelming.

However, I believe with the right support system around us, this is a challenge we can overcome together.

What are my aims?

- To create regular support groups for students to be able to gather and share their thoughts, feelings and struggles during their time at university. Although the university offers amazing support, for some people it can be intimidating to converse with officials, and they may prefer a more casual environment.

- To act as a point of information for students regarding the services offered at the University of Derby for those of us affected by disabilities.

- To create regular accessible meetups with fun activities like board games, quizzes, movies, painting and snacks to help students experience a more casual, less pressured environment in which they can socialise and discuss/share interests with each other.

I would really like to be able to do these things and more. I would like to be an advocate for your suggestions on change here at the university. Together we can make university life easier for all of us!
