Role I am applying for: Student Union – Part-time Officer Role for Built and Natural Environment School

Profile

My name is Harry Whitehouse, I am currently a foundation year student on the Civil Engineering degree based in the Markeaton campus.

I am a highly motivated and driven trade graduate learning my skills and gaining experience in Carpentry, I have experience working within diverse teams under pressure as well as an individual, I am able to communicate and function with ease in high pressure situations to ensure end goals are reached not only fluently but to a high degree of quality. I am able to adapt myself to new challenges and also eager to constantly learn at any given opportunity. I believe that university is a place for students to not only grow within the degree they study but grow as an individual. I believe my past experience working in the Building industry will help me along my studies but could also help me to improve the very course I am studying.

Therefore, I am keen to run for Part-time Officer for the Built and Natural Environment school so that I can improve the University experience for many students like myself.

Key aims

Due to the current circumstances and also being new to university life myself I am yet to see the campus and course at its full potential, therefore, aims for improvement are difficult to identify. During the first 3 months of my course modules and speaking to tutors and other students I have come to realise there is so much to offer that students are unaware is available to them.

My first aim would be to improve the awareness among students of the extra resources and equipment that is available and ready to use outside of lecture times. I believe if students were made aware and demonstration days were held to show students what is available round the corner. For example, Markeaton campus has many 3D printers as well as a recording studio and VR labs, which allows access all students however not all are aware they have this privilege.

My Second aim would be to gain a clear and precise understanding of what students feel would be beneficial changes to their university lives. As these years will be highly important to their growth as an individual and also their growth in their chosen career industry, the views of those it will affect is essential.
