Hey guys my names Jonny! I’m a Sport and Exercise Science student heading into my 3rd year of my course and my 4th year here at Derby overall. I’ve represented the men’s teams at UoD Table Tennis for 3 years (I have been 2nd team captain for the last 2 years), have been the club Secretary for 2 years and have just been elected as President for the 2021/22 year!

Our committees time and commitment took the club from a Bronze development club in the 18/19 year all the way to achieving Gold development in the 19/20 year and I’d be looking to help try to extend this success across the board to all sports clubs.

From being a part of a “smaller” club I’ve experienced how much having a voice within the Union helps and I’d love to be that voice for you guys!

With everything that has happened over the last year I'm keen to make sure that everyone can get involved in the sports that they love again this year!

I’d like to thank you for taking your time to find out about me and I look forward to hopefully working with you all this upcoming year!

Next years as Sports Councillor I would love to achieve the following points:

  1. I want all clubs to be able to return back to their own pre-COVID levels of engagement, training, membership levels etc as I know just how important this is for clubs and their committees (I know it is for myself and the Table Tennis club especially)
  2. I recently attended a Mental Health First Aid, and Suicide First Aid courses myself and found these extremely eye-opening, helpful, and so important in todays society. I know the Union runs club/committee training on topics like these, but I’d really like to try and push this further next year and get as many people (even non-committee members) involved and trained up on how to deal with certain situations, not just in mental health but with disabilities/gender etc
  3. As part of a “smaller” club with Table Tennis in the past we have felt like our voice is muffled compared to the “bigger” clubs like Netball/Football for example and I’d love to be able to give a voice to these smaller clubs to enable them to feel more involved in the Union and decisions that are made
