Hi, I'm Dom and I am running for...

Vice President of Activities!

I am a third year History student, currently in my fourth year here at the university having previously done an access course!!

During my time at university, I have served and currently serve as:

  • Student Union Sports Councillor

  • Student Union Societies Councillor

  • Student Officer for the College of Humanities and Journalism

  • Rounders President

  • Trampolining Treasurer

  • Men's Basketball Treasurer

  • History Society Treasure

  • Student Rep

Having worked alongside a multitude of union departments and student communities over the last four years, I feel I have gained a diverse wealth of experience and insight. This appreciation and understanding has enabled me to make a lot of positive changes within my positions, which I look to take forward into this new role. I aim to continue combatting the challenges that are affecting students across sports, societies, and the wider student community.

1) To provide more practice facilities for teams and societies:

I want to enable our Derby societies to grow, whilst investigating opportunities for development and expansion of current facilities. I plan to redevelop and improve both the Sturgess and the Markeaton fields, as this is something I and the Sports Council are working on currently.

I realise that most societies do not have a designated space closer to student accommodation, and campuses. Therefore, I aim to lobby for more society-oriented space that enables convenience for students on these locations.

2) Provision for more S&C + sport and society-specific training opportunities:

One of the most pressing sports improvements that is requested is more Strength and Conditioning to improve the performance of all our sports teams. I will work to expand this provision for sports, plus encouraging more sports specific training. I would also like to promote training provision for coaches, referees, and umpires.

I also want to encourage opportunities for all societies to develop their society with society-orientated training. I will also promote accessibility to wellbeing and mental health training, alongside promoting the importance of First Aid Training for all our societies.
I will also expand our Mental Health and first aid training courses, alongside student led Wellbeing Services.

3) To work with sports teams to promote accessibility for all levels of student ability:

I want to work with teams to encourage accessibility in sport for all abilities. This will be accomplished through creating non-competitive and competitive leagues, increased promotion , and expansion of inter-halls competitions as well as creating and expanding development teams. I will also be looking to work with Welfare and Inclusivity officers within teams to ensure that sports and activities are as accessible as possible. I aim to run polls on UDO and utilise the Sports Council to gather students' feedback. With this information we can then move forward in creating a more accessible sporting community.

4) More presence and visibility for societies:

I will increase society presence on social media by increasing promotion on union accounts and expanding the new Societies Council social media account as well as increasing usage of union marketing resources towards societies. I also aim to make sure societies continue to have the opportunity to recruit members through frequent activities and societies fayres. I will also be proactively encouraging societies to host social events should they wish to with more union support. I will host spotlight events for societies to generate interest, making sure to display our diverse society community on a more visible platform.
