Callum Young Manifesto
Hello, my name is Callum Young, and I am in my 3rd and final year studying counselling and psychotherapy and I am going to be running for Vice President of Welfare.
Over the past two years, we have certainly been tested. Throughout these challenging times the main thing that got me through was the strong support system around me. I want to provide this support and more for the students at the University of Derby in their studies, everyday life, and future.

My Aims
Protecting our mental health is so crucial, it allows us to recognise, express and regulate our emotions, helping us to reach our highest potential. My aims are to ensure that no one is suffering alone whilst studying here in Derby and they have the tools and support to help them, even after leaving university.
-    I aim to implement and establish Health and Wellbeing officers within society committees and provide them with the appropriate training and support, so they can help their club members effectively.

-    Reach out to those who are struggling to adapt to university life, whether they are living in halls, commuting from home, or travelling from overseas to learn. It is a big and scary change, and we can all recognise this. This is where the student helpline will be essential, and I aim to raise awareness of it and display it throughout the university.

-    To make sure that students feel safe when they are on a night out, that includes being in the club and when walking home after. To achieve this, I will be in constant contact with Mukky Duck and the bars around the city.

-    Work with all sports and societies to encourage diversity and inclusion within their clubs, providing information on inclusive language and how to use it correctly.

-    Finally, I aim to help make the university more sustainable by working with them and helping to take steps to reduce our carbon footprint via the ‘road to zero carbon’ strategy that is already in place.

Why Me?
To begin, over the past year I have been a mental health ambassador for a rugby mental health charity called Balls for Brainz. This charity delivers mental health workshops to rugby clubs across the UK, and we are lucky enough to be their first-ever university rugby affiliates! I am trained in mental health first aid and have adaptable skills that allow me to provide a unique perspective within my course, counselling and psychotherapy and in my life.
I hold a strong passion for equality, diversity and inclusion and believe that this is a very important aspect that everyone should be educated in. I have been studying here at Derby for four years now, my friends would describe me as friendly, talkative and loyal. I understand all the highs and lows of university and would like to help ease all the concerns and worries that might be flowing through the student's minds. I recognise that I have a number of aims but I am sure I can instill all of these and help this be a university you are proud to call yours!

Vote Callum!
