Candidate for the position of Online Learners Officer

Rachel Tulloch

Previously I have undertaken my MSc Psychology degree at the University of Derby as an online learner. I am now undertaking my second MSc in Health Psychology as an online learner at Derby. I feel that this allows me to reflect on my online learner experience and support my fellow online students. It would be a privilidge to represent the online student community and actively fight for what you want and my long term goal is to improve your online university experience.

A common worry or concern that students face is managing their work/life balance alongside their online studies and assessments. I hope to allay these worries by creating online workshops and/or seminars on different aspects of student life that complement the very helpful workshops that the Library already run. I also hope to work with module tutors, using feedback from students, surrounding assessments and how they are discussed and explained to see if there are changes which can be implemented to reduce worries and stress relating to assessments.

Futhermore, studying online can feel isolating at times as we are not on-campus. I will be working hard to use student and staff feedback in order to create ways in which inter-student communication can be improved and used to support your online studies.

If elected, I will use your feedback and my experience as an online student to improve your online learning experience. I feel very passionately that online students should be offered the same experiences and opportunities as on-campus students. The only difference between the two groups should be the method in which we study, not the access and enjoyment we get from learning. I look forward to the opportunity to be your voice.
