Hi, I’m Joe and I’m currently a second year Strength, Conditioning and Rehabilitation student with a passion for training and climbing and next year I will be basing my research project around coaching adaptations in rock climbing. I’m running for president with the aim of helping to improve the competitiveness of all willing members whilst having as much fun as possible.
Throughout my current course and past experiences, I have gained skills which I believe will be necessary for maintaining and taking this society to the next level such as:
-Managing and organizing events
-Coaching and training
But most importantly I’m dedicated to improving the climbing experience for members of all ability levels.
Aims
Improve attendance of our advanced climbers
- Personally, I value our more experienced climbers very highly as they directly and indirectly positively influence the climbing of the less experienced members so I will attempt to implement new ideas to keep them excited by the social sessions I plan to do this mostly through friendly competition.
-Firstly, I would implement a fortnightly “pick and mix” style bouldering route (with a year long scoring system) set by our committee members in order too keep things fresh as its well known that our bouldering wall is small, and we can’t afford to change the routes at an ideal rate so it would be impractical to promise a greater frequency of route setting however it will be attempted.
- Secondly, I would attempt to implement frequent friendly challenges and competitions using kit such as the lattice board, hang board and hopefully pinch blocks in the future to provide a fun training stimulus and provide goals to strive towards for all our members. Also, this would take some attention away from the top rope area and bouldering mats as they can become unsafe when crowded.
Planning Climbing opportunities
- I believe that many members would appreciate the opportunity to climb outdoors or at least at another climbing center in order to try new styles of routes so I will attempt to plan a trip to another climbing centre or ideally somewhere to climb outdoors to enhance the climbing experience.
Making Climbing more financially accessible
- Climbing at other centers can become expensive so I will attempt to make a deal with a local climbing center (preferably The Climbing Unit) to make frequent climbing more accessible to our members.
- Using my contacts gained through my research project I will also look to hiring a cheaper coach if a deal can't be made so we can afford high level coaching for more of our members and spend our funding more evenly throughout the society.
Provide training advice
- Finally, I would like to make training advice more readily available to our members through infographics/posters and one on one coversation on topics such as training for strength, mobility, endurance and other physical characteristics for climbing.
Thanks for voting and see you next year
Joe Andrews - Cifre (your future president)
