Hey everyone! I’ve decided to go for the role of Wellbeing Mentor. I know I’m quite new to the club, however I’ve had the best time with you girls in the short amount of time I’ve spent with you. Therefore, I feel like I have a lot I would like to give back! And if there is one thing that I know like the back of my hand, it’s being the voice of mental health and wellbeing.
I’m your current Mental Health Awareness Officer at the Union, this means that I was elected in by students to be the voice of all things Mental Health regarding concerns that students may have. I have spent my time in meetings, campaigning for changes to be made to benefit students and their wellbeing. It was Callum Young from men’s rugby and I who pushed for wellbeing mentors to be in societies! Therefore, I would love even more to have the pleasure of being able to fill the role!
I also have a close relationship with Dom White who has been elected in as our VP Activities next year. Me and him have already spoken about how rugby can get involved with some mental health campaigns and even an exciting tag rugby tournament for a mental health charity which is currently being planned ;)
If I was voted in, I would also like to start 'Mental Health Mondays' on the Instagram page. Each week, we either have a takeover from one of the girls with a message of empowerment or an inspirational quote etc. We could even team up with the boys team for a few, which would massively boost our affiliation with balls for brains. I believe it's all about showing that we are inclusive and that we really do care as a club.
I believe that I bring confidence, consideration and compassion to the table. I have a strong passion for mental health awareness and feel that everyone should have someone that they feel safe opening up to with any struggles, I hope I can be that person for our club. I have also completed the affilated Look After Your Mate Mental Health Training and strive to constantly educate myself on how is best to support others and myself!
I’m also super eager to keep up the affiliation we have with balls for brains! I massively support their mission and hope to continue our work with them throughout the next year. Getting people of all genders to open up about their struggles is a stigma that we need to crush and I hope that I can work with balls for brains on that mission with them!
I also feel super excited at the concept of recruiting new freshers! I believe that I would be a great asset to have at the freshers' fairs etc, to get girls feeling excited about potentially trying something new with rugby. I pride myself on making people feel welcome and I think that I could provide the freshers with a friendly face during the daunting change of starting University!
So please vote me in for Wellbeing Mentor, I hope I can count on your vote!
